"Our cabin was located toward the base of Sugarloaf Mountain within the sounds of the rushing river. I walked down past a rustic chimney to the river and headed back up the steep road. The pavement curved around forgotten Appalachian barns and homes as it wound toward the top. I finally had to pick an optimal spot to hop off the road and elevate through the winter forest. It was easy walking through the forest until I was about 20 feet from the summit. A snowy peak covered in short, naked branches allowed me sweeping views of Grandfather Mountain and many other peaks.
