"When asked why he would want to climb Mount Everest, George Mallory famously answered "Because it's there." When asked why I sometimes venture out to obscure mountains, I say "To see what's there." Oftentimes, there isn't much to see on the hilltops around here. Smith Mountain on the boundary of Little Rock City is a notable exception. A disorderly cluster of rectangular, snow-coated boulders greeted me at the summit. What a sight!
The highest rock was located at 42.22385, -78.68531 according to my phone. Interestingly enough, Caltopo's highest elevation reading (2,240 ft.) is at this exact same spot just inside the state forest boundary. The USFS's elevation marking (2,236 feet) is on private land and was noticeably lower based on my boots-on-the-ground observations.
On the way back, I bushwhacked through an area with even larger boulders. Geologists would have a field day here with so many unique rock formations everywhere. " — theascent • Feb 12, 2023
