"A bit of a drive into the Western district of Saguaro National Park is the Signal Hill Picnic Area. Signal Hill itself is only a little bit farther from the picnic area, and has an amazing collection of early pictographs (I think Hohokam period? So pre-1400 CE) on top of the little hill. A peak that was just the right "size" for Joe - it had a nice trail, there were saguaros everywhere (Joe even managed to poke himself badly enough to bleed...), and even though the smoke from the Cali wildfires was all the way down with us in Tuscon, it was still a lovely evening. We went a little further beyond Signal Hill itself onto the Cactus Wren trail just to look at more saguaros before turning around, as the road closes at dusk and we were already at sunset. A family was picnicking in one of the CCC structures when we hiked up; when we returned, they were gone but had left a half-full can of Bud Light. Ugh. We took it out with us and put it in one of the recycling receptacles at the parking lot. Seriously, people... pack your crap out. " — psychikingjes • Sep 14, 2020
