"Hiked with Jay, Allison and new friends Jen and Mark today on Seymour. As well as fury friends Harry and Kelly. Conditions were good till the summit approach where we were faced with 3' drifts. Micro spikes till the second lean-to then snow shoes to the summit. Views from the windy summit were spectacular! The trip down was a different story. With the fresh snow broken by the trip up the way down was fast and treacherous. I fell twice. Hurting my shoulder on a tree strike. Once down it was a death march to the cars. 22/46W." — garyogden • Feb 21, 2024
"I had booked a place to stay in Lake Placid for Thursday night through Sunday. New hiking friends and I talked about doing Marshall on Friday and the Lower Great Range on Sunday. Well, the best laid plans and all that, neither happened as planned – but two hikes got done! Both Friday and Sunday had rain in the forecast, but Saturday was looking beautiful. We switched plans to Seymour for Friday because of the rain and concern about a water crossing on Marshall. Two of the group backed out altogether though and I thought the whole thing was a bust. But friend of a friend wanted to go rain or shine so last minute we were back on. I woke up to thunder in the early morning but the mountain forecast was still saying only light rain early on and then clearing up. I was stocked with rain pants and jacket, and a backpack cover, this time in an attempt to not be as miserable as I was on Street & Nye. Hannah was a wonderful hiking companion and we forged out in the rain – which did not stop until we were well on the way down. The hike out is a long flat to gradual trek on the Blueberry trail for about 6 miles or so before you start to really get to elevation gain. We saw just a few people ou..." — kvander • Jul 30, 2021
"Back to the Seward range this time for Kathryn’s 46R quest. Despite a 5:40 am arrival the Seward PA was full so we had to park along the short access to the PA. Fortunately we had much better weather than a month ago and for the most part the trails and HPs were drier. We did Seymour first then came back to the Ward Brook HP to do the other three then take the Caulkins Brook HP back down. Early on our ascent up Seward I made a poor assessment of a mud hazard and went in two feet deep with both feet....lovely! Lunch on Seward then over to Donaldson where I decided to forgo Emmons, as I didn’t “need” it, and descended down the HP while my cohorts went for Emmons. I didn’t get any sleep the night before so I was bit tired all day. Great views, numerous others out on the range and we got Kathryn up to #39/46 a good day for three of us. Tom and Kathryn got back to the PA just before 8 pm, for about a 14 hr day, tired but full of excitement." — Nimblefoot • Oct 3, 2020
"Marathon day on Seward Range. Made camp in campsite on Calkins Brook Trail. Headed up herd path to ridge and Donaldson. Over and back to Emmons and onto Seward. Descended Seward and still had a couple of hours of daylight left and went up Seymour for dusk. Returned back from Seymour and hiked back to campsite with headlamp on. Hiked out next day." — JMindlin12463 • Jun 8, 2020
"A day hike to Seymour Mountain. The Seward range completed. Awesome day out with great friends doing what we love, Trails were dry ,, very little mud, nice walk in to the mountain then last mile or so kinda step but very doable for this crew,Views were great from the north side and okay to the south, Glad we broke this one up. Another perfect day" — ramjet1963 • Aug 4, 2019
"Tom, Black and I left the trailhead at 6:46 @ 60 degrees and partly cloudy skies. Hikes 5.2 miles on flat but wet trail to Ward Brook lean-to. Black flies and skeeter present but not bad. The next 1.5 miles to summit was steeeep! Summited at 11am. The views from the side lookouts were spectacular! Wind gusts to 50 mph. Big wet slippery slides below the summit. Returned to car at 3:30." — garyogden • May 26, 2019
"Finally a good day in the Daks to hike. Weather has been very wet this spring and summer and there have been only a few good days especially on week ends to hike so Deb and I had to take advantage! The sun was out, temperature was nice but due to the rains, mud was all through the Seymour trail from start to summit. Mosquito's were out in full force as well. We did enjoy the day, the trail all the way to the start of the unmarked trail is really nice and very easy, a great warm up. Once on the herd path we found the going tough, very steep and muddy! So we just took our time and went carefully up and back. Views were good from a couple of lookouts on the summit." — hbotc • Jul 16, 2017
"Hiked with Kim Stilson. 39/46. Kim met me at my house stupid early in the morning for the long drive up. We made great time on the truck trail, very light snow covering the leaves- it was really beautiful! We had no issue following the herd path after the Ward Brook LeanTo, however our pace slowed considerably on the icy ascent. The slides were pretty ridiculous and numerous! There were two men on the trail ahead of us who we met near the summit. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great, it snowed lightly most of the day, and we had no views at the top. We needed spikes, but no snowshoes. There were plenty of mud bogs and water crossings to contend with! We celebrated our summit and Kim's 400th (!!!!) mountain with a beer, snapped a few photos and headed back down. Again, our pace was very slow on all of the ice being very sure of our hand holds and foot holds. We practically jogged out the truck trail and were back at the car before nightfall. It was a tough climb but a good one. " — kellieirene • Oct 31, 2016
"Hiked with Kellie. Woke up really early and headed over to Kellie's house to head up to the daks to hike Seymour with her. My 400th individual peak. Slowly working on my ADK46ers. " — Kim-Stilson • Oct 31, 2016
"4th of July weekend (Day 2). Camped near Ward Brook lean-to. Party of 2 + Dog. Sore from day before, but made it up and out. Last hike before serious back injury sidelined me for over a year." — ndru-virus • Jul 4, 2016
