"I started my first work vacation of the year with a bang. My last work day was Wed., and then Thu., I left home at 4am from N. Orange County, passed thru Ridgecrest for refueling and breakfast, and drove to just a little shy of (just southeast of) Walker Pass on 178 at about 4,800' elev where a dirt road crosses s.w. through a wash near some old foundation ruins near mile marker 81.50. I meant to take the old, abandoned, overgrown dirt road that directly heads to the mouth of a canyon just under the ridge of the Scodies, but missed it, so I hiked across the desert cross-country until I reached it, and followed it to its end at about 5,400' elevation in a pinyon grove. This is where it gets interesting and stays so until my return on the dirt track! I decided to take a more direct approach to Scodie. I started up the main northeast drainage, and then veered left up a very loose, steep slope, with very difficult footing, making me work my legs and feet hard to gain elevation with slopes at times attaining about 45 degrees. I had to grab onto tree branches, hop rocks, and bushwhack to try avoiding the loosest of soil, which was not always possible. After so much slogging and sc..." — brianpowell • Apr 4, 2019
"From the campground. Navigating to the summit was somewhat difficult due to the tree cover and the flatness of the summit plateau. I eventually got a fix on my location and made my way to the summit block. I followed a different creek bed on the way down, but it eventually rejoined the primary route." — klotito • May 13, 2017
"After driving to the end of Cow Heaven Canyon, we hiked up the trail towards the canyon, but split off to the right off the main trail, at a side trail that goes straight up the ridge towards the direction of the summit. A faint use trail is visible in some places. We then headed cross-country up the ridge, with lots of class 3 at the top, and towards what we thought was the summit, but turned out to be the first false summit. We then headed to the next false summit, and finally to the actual summit where the register is located." — srphilip • Jun 7, 2015
"Somehow convinced my fiancee to climb this with me. We went up from Cow Heaven Canyon. Have to say this ended up being a tougher hike than I expected. She was not pleased lol.
Beautiful day, however!" — Irrationalist • Oct 20, 2013
"After a delay in getting up to Yosemite, I decided not to waste my morning and headed out to Walker Pass. It rained the entire drive over but I figured if I could get east of the pass the clouds might get blocked. Was in and out of clouds (literally) most of the day and decided to book it straight up the east ridge instead of using the North gully since the ridgeline looked cloud free. Once I topped out of the ridge it was great scrambling around false summits the rest of the way to the top. Unfortunately everything to the west was lost in clouds but I did have cloudy views of Baccus and Russel Peaks along with the top of Owens and Jenkins. Took the North Gully down and dropped about 2000' in less than 30 minutes! I can't remember a more fun descent! This was definitely one of the better HPS peaks, although I imagine my ridgeline scramble made it more fun than the standard route." — Christopher • Jan 26, 2013
