"oh how nasty this one was, especially after the large storm...
the Kanc closure prevented us from doing Nancy, so.....why not tackle scar ridge...the infamous worst bushwhack on the NE100 highest! This thing was god awful with hundreds of new trees down. It took serious navigational skills, a trusty compass, some guessing and hard work....throw in crawling on our bellies and climbing over 3-5 stacked tree trunks sometimes as high as 15 feet off the ground. But we made it!" — shay-shay • Oct 31, 2017
"OMG!!! Hardest day in the mountains EVER. Summited 15 minutes before the 'turn around'. Came out of the 'wack' 20 yards from where we entered. Old school map, compass and dead reckoning only. Glad this one is done. #79!!" — goshen-bagger • Oct 21, 2017
"Very difficult bushwhack. Spruce walls and deadfall can seem impenetrable at times. Black diamond ski trails provide great views of Mt Flume and Mt Liberty in the distance, but are definitely not meant for hiking. This one was tough. Glad its in the books now." — ducati996 • Oct 7, 2017
"Bushwhacked up Mack Brook to the big slide. Tried to bushwhack up to Scar Ridge, but it is virtually impossible from this vantage point. Combine the steepness, the incredible thickness of the fir trees, the number of holes to step in, blowdowns, leaning on trees for support where so many are dead and just snap and all those pointy sharp branches that grab you and stick you. Ouch!" — Alohabuffy • Sep 10, 2017
"Looking on newenglandtripreports, somebody had done Scar Ridge, West Peak on Sunday. I decided to go for it on Tuesday. Steep climb up Loon Mtn ski slopes. Hike for about 3-5 min, rest for 1 min. Took 2 hours to ascend. Then followed the herd path, then located the snowshoe prints. The person had GPS tracks because the prints bypassed a lot of the nasty stuff. 90 min from Loon, reached the summit of Scar West Peak. Couldn't open the canister. Either it was frozen shut or somebody tightened it to hard. Made faster time going back and did some butt sledding down the ski slopes." — newenglandwarrior • Jan 26, 2016
"Hiked up the ski trails to South peak then over to Loon Mtn. and on to North Peak. From there we hiked a short distance on the Upper Walking Dog ski trail and took a right into the woods and followed an unpatrolled ski trail until a blowdown. From there we bushwhacked, generally following the ridge up to Scar Ridge summit. Temps were in the high teens all day with a little snow fall." — StoneMan • Dec 1, 2012
"Hiked up the Brookway and Walking Boss ski trails to Loon Mountain North Peak. Followed the Black Mountain herd path until it began to descend and turn north, then bushwhacked along the ridge to Scar Ridge West Peak. The bushwhack on the way out was never too thick, though on the way back, we ran into some extremely thick spruce." — wrobichaud • Aug 26, 2011
