Sawmill Mountain is a lovely, moderate hike from Pine Canyon Road up 7N23/7N23A. Since the hike is on dirt road, the grade is moderate, but expect 4WD traffic, of course. The scenery is top-notch, being a botanist's delight, with several types of oaks, pines, and a few groves of Bigcone Douglas-Fir creating a wonderful diverse assortment of shrubs and trees. When my buddy and I reached a saddle junction with Sawmill Motorway, Pacific Crest Trail, and the branching off of 7N23A/B, we saw a route west up from the east ridge of the mountain. We took a use/game trail over a concrete water tank(?), over a small guardrail, and followed the very faint, sometimes non-evident path through grass up and over a dale, then up to the sparsely shrubby summit. The views are phenomenal, spanning out over the Mojave Desert, Antelope Valley, San Gabriel Mountains, Tehachapi Mountains, and Frazier Mountain looming in the background just over the hogback profile of nearby Liebre Mountain. We then took a better-defined use trail down the south ridge, but not without the typical slaps of chamise and mountain mahogany branches to the face, and then we rejoined 7N23A and proceeded to visit Burnt Peak before returning to the car. Excluding Burnt Peak, the hike would have been about 9-10 miles with 1,400' gain. The stats below only take in account the hike to and from Sawmill, as Burnt Peak would make a fairly longer outing with more elevation gain and hiking time.
