"This is a mountain that I often tried to fit in to my travel plans. This time around, it was right down the road when I started my day. I wanted to get there early to beat the heat, and I succeeded. Most of the morning, I also had high cloud coverage overhead that diffused the sun. It was actually a pleasant morning in the desert, which I certainly took advantage of. The trail is on a four wheel drive road until reaching a saddle, where the road ends. From there, a use trail goes up the slope. There are a few false summits along the way, which would definitely be demoralizing on a really hot day, but not a big deal on this day. The summit has an old building foundation and some decent views. From there, I returned the way I came." — MikeTeeples • Jul 31, 2021
"Felt more like a DPS peak. Would have been enjoyable we’re it not for the intense wind. Holly turned back about halfway up and I hustled the rest of the way to get up and down as quickly as I could before the afternoon storms rolled in. "Fun climb from near Trona Road. It was near 80 degrees when I started but thankfully some clouds moved back in. HPS Route 1 guide is a bit vague on this mountain, but if you just keep heading uphill you'll find the way. Heard, and then saw, a very large rattlesnake near point 4728' on the descent. From the summit I think I may have been able to see Charleston Peak outside of Las Vegas." — edg • Apr 7, 2019
"Hiked with Black Mountain on the way up to Mammoth. The wind stole the show on this outing. It was blowing west to east sustained at 50 mph and gusting probably up to 75 mph. There where a few moments where I was being blown up (!) the trail. I kinda just spread my arms and let the force push me uphill. Great views from the top - over 2000 ft prominence. There are the remnants of some kind of air horn signal station at the top. I wished I could have hanged out a little longer, but the wind was just too intense!" — klotito • Apr 7, 2018
