"Peak 3986 was the first peak of six (3968, Mt. Scorpion, Black Hill, 3954, Railroad, 4040) on this north to south adventure. We decided to drive out to the mountain on the west side jeep trail and start at the bottom of a steep, loose chute just north of the first peak. The chute was like all the others on the west side of the mountain....loose and steep. With some patience we were able to pick our way up some decent, larger talus that made the slippage tolerable. Hiking poles were a major help. From Peak 3968 we traversed the ridge line to the south and tagged 5 more peaks. The ridge line has a lot of gain and loss on it, with some fun route finding. There is a lot of broken rock...from scree to boulders. There is an exit chute to the west that is just north of the last peak, Peak 4040, that we felt would be a very desirable exit in the future. For this adventure we went back to the saddle between Railroad Peak and Peak 3954, a known route. Once back down to the valley floor we followed the jeep trail back to the starting TH. Definitely a scramblers route." — Heartattackbruce • Feb 5, 2023
""True" south ridge route. I swear I'm not stalking Bruce! I did this route more than 12 years ago, and thought I better recheck it before I offered advice. The day I chose was strongly influenced by the wind predictions; this is definitely NOT a route for windy days. Careful route-finding allows you to do a class 3 approximation; as written here, there is a class 4 crux to avoid very steep side-hilling on talus. If you try to keep on the strict ridgeline, there is some thoughtful exposure." — hwstock • Feb 4, 2023
"A fine traverse that gets better the further you go. Someone made A Joe out of the rocks on railroad hill . Also saw a homeless encampment right in front of scorpion peak guy looks like he has been there a minute " — joshortman • Jan 19, 2023
"10.16.2021~Black Hills Quad Massacre, solo North to South Ridge Ramble of all 6 High Lumps & Bumps. 3,868’, Mount Scorpion, Black Hill, 3,954’, Railroad Peak (Highpoint) & 4,040’ (then Back to Railroad Peak). 7 miles, 3,000’ gain in 5:27hrs. I had so much fun yesterday, I went back for more. I got to the HP, Railroad peak (5th peak of 6) in 2:40hrs. A personal best for me. This mountain ridge is a giver. It’s rugged, exposed at times and very challenging with views of grandeur. I ate steak and potatoes before the trek so during I consumed no food and went thru the 67 oz of water I brought. I made some repairs to a few registers that were battered and added ziplock bags to protect the paper. These are rarely visited peaks except for the easy to get to North end shoulder which gets the most visits because it’s easy. Some only get 1 or 2 sign-ins per 1.5 years and it’s mostly my name :@) A few times I heard some animal or reptile hiss as I went by. I didn’t stick around to see what made the sound. Great day! Tad on the warm side with some cool breezes that refreshed me. I view this mountain everyday from my kitchen window in Henderson, NV." — paula.raimondi • Oct 16, 2021
"10.15.21~Railroad Peak, Black Hills, Henderson NV. 2.7 miles rt , 1,800’ gain. I’ve climbed and traversed this mountain Ridge several times. I can see it from my kitchen window. It’s rugged & picturesque prominence welcomes you into the Vegas Valley from the South. This was Laszlo’s first time up.
On the summit today we learned of the passing of Tom Hawley
Rest Peacefully Chopper Tom Hawley. I’m sorry your journey on earth had to end this way. Thanks for hosting the Annual Charleston Peak Pot Luck and your fantastic news productions about the history of Southern NV. I will miss running into you in the mountains. I’m glad you got your 60th Charleston summit this year for 60 years on the planet. It looked spectacular getting up there for that Sunrise Summit. You must have been happy that morning. I hope your memories of being in the mountains gave you comfort at the end. I know you loved dawn treks to Mummy Mtn. It was nice meeting you, hiking with you and seeing you on the news everyday. I’m sad to hear of your passing. Farewell. Las Vegas won’t be the same without your presence. Cancer took you away so fast. So unfair :@(

"Went up from Nevada State College. Ascended Mount Scorpion then traversed over to Black Hill, Peak 3954 and then over to Railroad Peak. Retraced my steps down from Railroad Peak to the first gully on the west side and descended making it a loop back to the trail head. This was a fun traverse with the typical desert terrain and some fun scrambling up to the peak. " — maggielynn • Feb 23, 2020
"12.11.19....Railroad Peak (#3) & peak 4,040’ traverse from the South, solo. 4.25 miles, 2,500’ gain, (took a while). These are the Impressive mountains you see (across from Railroad Pass Casino), when driving to the Henderson/Las Vegas area from the South and Boulder City. Today wasn’t about a new peak, it was about Mountaineer route Mastery. This is one of the very 1st routes I read on Harlan’s Web page years ago, and it dropped my jaw. This ridge defies gravity and is terrifying at times. Overhung and overwhelming. I had to pick my battles. Sometimes I was on top and sometimes I had to find other options below, which were just as challenging and horrifying. It was difficult and rewarding. I fought with all I had. The visuals were disturbing and exhilarating. At one point, I saw an escape gully and thought about quitting but I endured. I never had to use the 50’ of webbing I had in tow. After Railroad Peak, I picked a descent chute (chasm) on the west side, just below the summit, that I had never used. Looking down, you can’t see if you will encounter a dry fall or get cliffed out but it went more in the direction of my car so I went for it. I did encounter interesting obstacles b..." — paula.raimondi • Dec 11, 2019
"12.12.18 Black Hills Solo 5 Peak Traverse. I see this beautiful ginormous Mountain from my kitchen window. Mount Scorpion, Black Hill, peak 4089, Peak 3954 & the Highpoint, Railroad Peak. 2nd time, 1st time solo and my fastest effort. 7 rough scrambling miles, 2,500’ gain in 4:43hr. Done in time to pick up the kiddos from school! I mastered the Monster Ridge. It was a sublime, adrenaline rush rollercoaster ride #namaste #waxonwaxoff #bigmountains #wildplacesnearhome #northmcculloughrange" — paula.raimondi • Dec 12, 2018
"It's been a long time coming for me to summit this Beast of a Mtn. I see it from my kitchen window and was so intimidated by the traverse I failed 3 prior times. I felt major shame on the first failure espcially when an ex friend (who came along with me) made clucking sounds ("you are a chicken") as I quit from vertigo and fear on the 1st hill. To him I say, "F-U!" In all we bagged 6 peaks and peaklets on the No./So. Traverse including the High point of Black Hills, Railroad Peak and Railroad Hill after the descent. A Hill far below with cool views of our accomplishment. I couldn't have done it without my mighty hike Pal Shin. He helped give me the confidence for success and made me feel very safe! No clucking sounds from this friend. Only words of encouragement! We enjoyed my thermos of cafe mocha and Shin flew his drone too." — paula.raimondi • Jan 25, 2017
"I did this as an afternoon traverse
