"Matt and I summited Phelps after Tabletop, it was stunningly beautiful. The wind whipped around us and we could not stay at the summit for long. There were some ice waterfalls that were tricky on the way up. " — juliepike • Nov 26, 2023
"Tom and I departed the LOJ lot at 7:20 am under blue skies, a light coating of fresh powder @ 11 degrees. Trail was hard packed all the way to the summit. 2" of fresh powder on the summit. We were the first two to summit today. 20-30 mph gusts with some blowing snow on the summit. Enjoyed great views of the Great Range and Marcy. Wore trail crampons door to door. The crossing of Phelps brook was still frozen well. Summited at 10 am. Returned to car at 12:30." — garyogden • Feb 18, 2023
"Phelps seemed long and steep but it was mostly clear at the top with spectacular views. Rained on the hike down
Tabletop is swampy and boggy at the top. The trail turns to a mud pit and your feet will get wet. It was raining so no views for me at the peak
Tough day, wet but not cold with a lot of ascent " — johnpursell • Sep 4, 2022
"Tried a speed run to Phelps. Moderate climb once you get to the base of the mountain with a handful of slick slides. View wasn't great due to cloud cover. Clocked in at 2 hours 59 minutes with a day/speed pack." — markfilliter • May 28, 2022
"Two more 46ers for Jen on a beautiful Fall day bringing her to 8/46. One doesn’t always need Fall foliage to have stunning views and they delivered today. The original plan was just to do Phelps, but she decided to want to go for Tabletop as well once we hit the junction on Van Hoevenberg trail, so off we went. This was not easy for her as she doesn’t hike longer distances but she plugged on through some fatigue and tears over the last haul and made it the 13 miles. A great day, her goal exceeded and more. Proud of her. " — scottturner • Oct 12, 2021
"Joined friends Peter and Miyon for a nice hike of TT and Phelps for Miyon’s 46R challenge. These two peaks brought her even with Peter putting both at #40, leaving only HaBaSA and the Santa’s with the dreaded Couchie. TT was the usual mucky mess of a herd path leading us to a limited view do to the low cloud cover. Fortunately as we climbed the much drier side trail to Phelps the clouds were parting allowing us the usual great views once on top. From the open ledge everyone was elated by the view and spent the lunch break identifying all the peaks and engaging in various photo ops." — Nimblefoot • Oct 10, 2021
"Another busy day at the Loj - parking still available at 6AM, though. Misty morning with wet (but not muddy) trails. Lots of thick fog/cloud cover on the summit of Phelps. Cleared up by summit of Table Top, but wooded summit obscured views." — hunterjfrost • Sep 4, 2021
"Cloudy and rain all day. Tabletop was the worst herd path of all. You are walking in a stream the whole way up. At the top, it was so cloudy there were no views. Phelps was a nicer hike. " — hanawalton • Jul 21, 2021
"Tom and I helping Kathryn in getting 3 more peaks for her 46R quest. Great day with beautiful weather. We spent nearly an hour on Phelps taking in the grand view, a first for Kathryn and Tom as his first ascent involved cloudy/wet weather. Kathryn excitedly realized that of the most of peaks, one can easily see from Phelps, she has done(34/46)." — Nimblefoot • Sep 19, 2020
"Tabletop and Phelps with Jeff and Meenu: We started out at 2 am Sunday and got to the trailhead a little before 6. It was a gorgeous day, slightly cool to start, and I wore my long sleeves for a good part of the hike (although I was plenty warm). Surprisingly ran into running friend Lori and her husband at the trailhead and saw them again coming down from the summit. The trail from the Loj is starting to seem familiar. We went past Marcy Dam and took the trail to Tabletop first. I wasn’t expecting much from Tabletop but I thought the views were great. We summited at almost exactly 3 hours in. After spending a little time enjoying the view and refueling we headed back down and took the short detour to visit Indian Falls, which was a beautiful lookout over some nice falls. Back down to the junction and we headed up Phelps. This was a bit steeper with a few boulders to climb but not bad. I was in the lead or much of it and trying to keep a steady pace even though I was a little tired at this point, and Meenu thought we were rushing her a bit (“do we have an appointment up there?”) . The views on Phelps were incredible. Seeing so many of the surrounding high peaks and beyond. I can r..." — kvander • Aug 16, 2020
