According to Google Maps, I parked at the intersection of Gramacy and Paramount Road. That being said, there were no street signs out there and the roads were dirt, so I parked as close to FR 3N24 as I could get, after pulling off of Highway 138 in Nuss Ranch (even the town was unsigned). Each targeted peak was in view from this spot, Peak 5114 and Phelan Benchmark to the left and Peak 4960 and Peak 4954 to the right. In between them all, FR 3N24 climbs through the desert like landscape to a saddle. It was at that point that I had to choose where to go first. I went right to visit the smaller peaks. Shortly after the saddle, a dirt bikers trail left the forest road and climbed to a high point. I took this route in hopes that it would take me to the peaks in a more direct way. It wound up cutting down the mileage a little bit, but I still had to drop back down to the road to climb Peak 4960 (which again had a dirt bikers trail tearing its way to the top). After a brief stop, I continued on to Peak 4954 in a similar fashion. A few times I had to move off the trail on the day since dirt bikers would pass by.

After Peak 4954, I stuck to the forest road and returned to the saddle. This time I went toward Peak 5114. The way up was on a wide dirt bike trail with some steep spots. I found nothing notable on top of Peak 5114, but as I looked down the other side, which was also the way to Phelan Benchmark, it was like looking down a ski slope. The sandy trail dropped right off its side. There was no doubt in my mind that the dirt bikers loved it, as dirt paths cut up and down the mountain. I chose one route down and kind of did my own version of sand skiing on the way. Dirt bikers sat at the bottom while watching some crazy hiker out on their turf, probably thinking that they would never go hiking out here (after watching them, I wanted to ride a dirt bike out here too!). Directly behind them was Phelan Benchmark, with the familiar vertical dirt biker trails carved into the slope. I sucked it up and began climbing the steep slope. There was a little bit of slip and slide, but it really didn't take long to get to the top. On top is a cross and an intact benchmark with great views of the desert, the San Gabriel Mountains, and even snow-capped Mount San Gorgonio.

After taking a few shots, I dropped back down between Phelan Benchmark and Peak 5114. I had already decided that I wasn't going to take the steep climb back up Peak 5114. I saw the forest road and Highway 138 below and I headed cross country to bypass Peak 5114. I started on a game trail which led in the direction I wanted to go. This got me into a position where I did a minor bit of bushwhacking before reaching Forest Road 3N24. I took a left and followed the road back to the car. This was a great hike on a day where the temperatures were in the low 50's. A warm or hot day would be unbearable out here with no shade and the dust kicked up by dirt bikers.
