"It's been a long time coming, but I finally got myself out there on a peak hike!! It's been 8 weeks since my last hike, so this felt like an extra treat. I drove on Ca-38 to about 2 miles north of Onyx Summit (high point of Ca-38) to a small forest dirt road (2N04 on Google Earth), drove about 1/4-1/2 mile down it and parked on the side. I hiked down it and passed the PCT along the way near the road's bottoming out and continued on 2N04 it as it gently rose for about a mile or so more until I reached a gully system south of the summit. I left the road and started cross-country up the gully, bearing left at the fork, and then I started walking up the gentle, easy slopes on the line between the pinyon pines and brush. Following the relatively straight tree line is a good navigational aid until the tree line starts bearing right as you approach the summit ridge. As the tree line bears right, I entered the woodland by staying more or less straight, then up and over a slight false summit, and then soon I was nearing the summit and a little bit of a clearing and found the summit rock mound which can be very easily surmounted by a very short, super basic class 2 move.
