"In an increasingly urbanized world, going to the mountains becomes an activity of adventure and exploration. Reaching the summit posed no problem for me; I saw partridges, cicadas, and rabbit droppings. However, something I didn't see stopped me in my tracks until I realized it was an Argiope lobata spider's web, and I retreated.
This web, which can measure up to three feet, is one of the most resistant, so I looked closely and there was the female spider with an abdomen as big as a two-dollar coin. Looking again, I saw a grasshopper caught in the web trying to break it with its hind legs.
Although this spider didn't seem very aggressive, its bite can be quite annoying, so I was careful when taking photos and was more attentive afterward as I crossed through the bushes." — franciscobirruezo • Jul 30, 2025
"I went this afternoon to Cortado de Las Peñas to climb each of the peaks that are on each side of this geological fault. The surprise was the gale that was blowing in the area and that in some places at the top threatened to throw me to the ground, however the thermal sensation was not cold due to dry winds from the northwest. I looked for a sheltered place to eat while I watched the clouds traveling towards the Mediterranean at full speed and some falcon trying to land with difficulty flying against the wind." — franciscobirruezo • Jan 11, 2025
"I need to walk through the mountains this afternoon so I take the car and approach the Cortado de Las Peñas, a tectonic fault that served as a natural passage between the highland areas and the coast of the Region. The clouds filter the sun on this first day of June and the feeling is pleasant. The vegetation resists the lack of water and yet I see quite a few animal tracks along the way. Towards the northwest the sky is beginning to cover and it looks like a storm is forming, I hope for a good downpour." — franciscobirruezo • Jun 1, 2024
"This mountain is halfway between the towns of Fortuna and Garapacha, it is an area where rabbits and partridges abound, in fact I find old hunting posts along the route. The repopulated pine trees provide shelter to some species of birds, and some pine caterpillars have also become active thanks to the mild temperatures these days. Old stone walls appear in some ravines to stop the erosion of the land a little, currently some retirees from other countries have bought old houses in the area and have rehabilitated them to live in them." — franciscobirruezo • Jan 27, 2024
"I am heading to the town of Fortuna to later arrive at the Cortado de Las Peñas. In this place I am surprised to see quite a few hikers enjoying the warm temperatures despite the gray sky.
However, I don't meet anyone on the way up this mountain, so I enjoy a good moment of silence. After eating some fruit near the top, a spider catches my eye and I take a picture of it. At home I see that it is an endemic species and has been cataloged very recently.
Shells of land mollusks, butterflies, grasshoppers and other insects I find along the path. Quite a few rabbit tracks and the marks left by foxes in their roaming." — franciscobirruezo • Oct 30, 2022
"And if the journey were important and not the goal. Life is a path you travel alone, but you can share part of the journey with other people. You just have to move forward with the imagination or with the legs ... or with both.
Remember that you don't have to go quickly but look around you." — franciscobirruezo • Aug 2, 2019
"We went today to Cortado de Las Peñas to see it better from above. I have to say that the views from the Peak 462 m are great. A small spring sprouts in the ravine and the appearance is of a mountain that collapses." — franciscobirruezo • Sep 12, 2017
