This peak was the result of a culmination of mishaps. After a decent night of sleep on call, I had half a day of daylight to work with and was shooting for Pilot Knob S, a now delisted SPS peak. It was delisted after ranch owners at the base of the mountain got sick of peakbaggers cutting through their property. My plan was to cut through the small sliver of property owned by the Audobon Society for the approach, but I was quickly stymied by swamps created by beavers damming up drainages of the Kern River.
Plan B- hike up the South Face of nearby Onyx Peak on the HPS list. The clouds were drowning out the summits so I didn't have landmarks on the drive over dirt roads in. I thought I was at the correct trailhead and headed straight upslope. I spooked a bobcat out of hiding (less than 20 ft away) and was rounding over the crest in less than an hour, which was much too quickly. When I topped out and could finally see north I knew why- I had climbed the wrong peak! Onyx was a good three miles north with a 2,500ft deep basin between me and Point 4480. I knew I didn't have enough daylight to tag anything else so I enjoyed the low clouds and called it a day.
