"This afternoon I climbed the 419-meter peak in the town of Cieza. There's no defined path to reach the castle or the remaining walls; it's a rocky slope dotted with thorny bushes. I spent a good while alone at the summit. Later, a mother and her son came up and told me that there are mountain goats in the area, although she hadn't seen any because they're quite elusive. On my way down, I found the Hermitage of Consuelo open because its caretaker, Emilio, was getting everything ready for tomorrow's mass. I chatted with him for a while, and he told me it was a very peaceful place. Fresh air, beautiful views, and so much peace—I think that's why this place appeals to me." — franciscobirruezo • Nov 7, 2025
"I approach Cieza to climb the Cerro del castillo La Atalaya, a castle located near a hermitage, this place is very rocky, quite impregnable and full of cliffs where the remains of an Islamic fortification from the 12th century remain. Below is the city next to the river and its fertile orchard. It is advisable not to get lost because there is no clear path and you can fall down a slope or off a cliff." — franciscobirruezo • Feb 6, 2025
"I climb to Cieza Castle with some friends using the Manolo Dato route that winds along the bottom of a dry river bed. Yesterday it rained and as we walk we leave our footprints in the sandy earth. The castle hill is rockier and steeper so the path is poorly defined which forces us to climb more attentively having to use our hands on the climbs.
At the top we had a small lunch enjoying the view of the city and the river that surrounds it. Many fruit trees are in full bloom and these days people from other regions of Spain come to Cieza to enjoy nature." — franciscobirruezo • Mar 10, 2024
"
I decide to do a route where there are few hikers today and I go to Cieza Castle. However, when I arrived in the area, I found a crowd and the police controlling the access due to a mountain sports event with dozens of runners to celebrate the beginning of flowering in the city's fields.
I decide to change the route and use a track on the north face of La Atalaya but every now and then I have to move a bit to let runners pass. I see many quite tired due to the harshness of the test and the strong slopes of these mountains.
In the end I have achieved my goal today but I have ended up talking to quite a few people." — franciscobirruezo • Mar 5, 2023
"The castle and the citadel of this mountain are from the 11th century
Going through this place, I realize that the people who lived here were mistresses of their destiny. Above all they were brave and they had honor.
Today we have the best technology but we are afraid of the neighbor next door.
We earn a lot of money but we do not have time to see our parents and siblings.
At that time every day was important, each person was important.
In each country there are extraordinary landscapes and places, also many mountains,
enjoy them because they are there for you." — franciscobirruezo • Oct 14, 2018
"The people of the Middle Ages were looking for easy places to defend near rivers. The Castle of Cieza at the top of this peak is a good example. Looking East we have seen the ruins of a medieval citadel. Also beautiful are the views of the Segura River as it passes through the City of Cieza." — franciscobirruezo • Sep 9, 2017
