"This is the highest peak in the southern half of Allegany State Park (the "Quaker" side). Some sources show it as the highest in the entire park. Its max elevation on CalTopo is 2,364', one foot higher than ASP's traditionally accepted highpoint at 42.12282, -78.69116 (on the "Red House" side). Computer modeling at everymountainintheworld.com show an elevation of 2,419 feet, which if true, would make it the highest publicly-accessible peak in the western half of New York State.
The flat, broad summit was not difficult to reach. The easy Black Snake Mountain trail took me within striking distance that was followed by pleasant off-trail hiking to the top. There were some large boulders scattered on the western slope, just below the summit. Not enough to be classified as a "rock city" like some of the others in SWNY and NWPA. This was more like a "rock village".
I briefly dipped into Pennsylvania along the way to step inside the other 2,360' contour circle in the immediate vicinity and was sure to snap a photo of the Allegheny National Forest boundary sign while there. " — theascent • Mar 26, 2023
