"8/12/23: From Mt. Edwards, it started to graupel and then rain as we approached the east point of 13645 and it was slow going for Jackson and Paul especially coming down off the west side. It’s kind of amazing that this is still the CDT (yes, the map says “trail undefined”) because there really is no trail to speak of for the most part. We made it to Peak 13645 as we were all starting to get cold and wet. Grays was now shrouded in clouds and there was little hope of it lifting anytime soon but I asked the guys if they wanted to tackle it just to say they had, hunker down and wait, or call it a day. The general consensus was to leave Grays (perhaps the South Ridge Scramble!) for another day.
There were three original return route options for us but they all assumed descending Grays. Fortunately I had been doing my job reconning possible bail routes off the east ridge and knew there was a decent way down from the saddle to Grays Lake. However, we decided to bee-line down first toward the cliffs of the Horseshoe Basin head wall to get a better view of a good route.
