"I drove up to Timber Creek and decided at the last minute to climb North Schell that day. It was supposed to be more stormy as the week went on, so I went for it. It’s a beautiful hike with flowing streams, meadows of flowers, old aspen groves, snow banks and stunning views. I parked & camped at one of two available free camp spots near the trailhead. There is a use path most of the way. I cut up the slope to the ridge a little earlier than I should have, but it was all good. The tundra was in full bloom & I saw several large deer. The atmosphere was stormy & I was a little worried. I decided to take a shortcut down & scree skied down the steep slope below the summit. It was short & fast! I don’t recommend it, but it got me off the mountain faster & wasn’t as horrible as I thought. In the end there were only a few rumbles of thunder, wind & 10 minutes of light rain. A warning to anyone planning to climb this soon - the road to Timber Creek & the campground are closed Mon-Thurs for construction. I don’t know how long it’s going to last, so check before you go!" — StudioHoodoo • Jul 30, 2023

"Another stop on the way south. Postholing for a mile on the way to the top. Real cold and windy but a great area. Got an upclose view of a Golden Eagle on the way down. Nice outing. " — MatthewWinterberg • Oct 24, 2018

"Drove up from Vegas to complete the Las Vegas Mountaineers Club 50 Classic Peaks list with Amber this weekend. We were sitting at 48/50. All we needed was North Schell & South Schell. Started up the gully west of the peak and followed it up to the ridge, which we took to North Schell. 1 more to go! We traversed ridge over Middle Schell, Uinta Peak, Taft Peak and Peak 11535, then finally ascended South Schell to complete the list. Success!! We had a champagne toast at the summit, then made the quick descent down the SW slope to Berry Creek, where we had a shuttle vehicle waiting. Excellent day with wonderful people from the LVMC club! "First Peak of the Day on what becomes a long Day climbing the Entire Ridge and back. Snow is not an Issue anymore.Well there is way down to the Campground between North & South Schell going down the Scree and hiking out the Canyon. Well it did not save me time as the Canyon was Full of Snow and the going was rough. Best would be to Set Up a Car Shuttle. " — Nuernberger • Jun 5, 2015

"I was in rare form for this one! With a long drive back to Los Angeles after the climb, I wanted to get this done quickly. I felt like I was dragging from the South and Middle Tetons two days earlier and Pilot Peak the day before, but somehow climbed over 3,000ft in less than 2 hours, taking less than an hour to descend the same distance! Was impressed by the Aspen grove at the start of the trail, very unexpected for the Great Basin. Overall a great peak." — Christopher • Aug 7, 2012

"Day didn't start off right. In backing up a rental van (wanted a small car) went off a cow grate into a hole. Two elk hunters helped get me out.
So got a late start at 9 AM on little sleep. Did a nice loop hike from North Schell Timber Creek - then rideline to summit South Schell, then descend to Berry Creek. Then missed a turn in the dark trying to cut across on the Ranger Trail back to the car. Finaly got back to car at 11:30 PM - kind of cool stumbling around in the dark listening to the elk bugle and coyotes howl not knowing for sure where the car was. Liked the ridgeline a lot.
