"Got to the trailhead at the North Mountain visitor center a little before 7am hoping to beat the crowds. For the most part I did. I took a newer trail from the visitor center that followed along 7th street and met up with trail 101 at a saddle. From there it was simply follow the trail to the road and then up the road to the antenna farm at the top. Weather was nice and not too crowded. Once at the top, I followed trail 44 along the ridge for about 500 ft. until it intersected a trail to the right that lead down to the west where it joined with trail 100. From there, it was a quick hike back to the visitor center. The track on this log was from a new US Topo app install on my phone and for some reason it didn't start recording until I hit the paved road. I'm still looking for a good trail/GPS app for the phone. But not bad for the first trial of the app. " — lawrencebaker • Jan 28, 2024
"A very nice hike - weather was great! Parked at the North Mountain visitors center; the parking lot opens at 5 AM even though the visitors center itself does not open until 8 AM. I got there at about 7:45 AM and the parking lot was a little more than half full. It's pretty large; it's not one that only has 10-20 spots. I'd estimate at least 200 spots? Anyway, North Mountain and Shaw Butte are both clearly very popular hikes. North Mountain is paved road (and steep), and Shaw Butte follows a service road that's either crumbling pavement or steep rocky gravel. More evidence that all in all, the trails in Phoenix are relatively short and very steep. Tons of people with dogs on the trail, but all leashed (which was good!). Radio towers on top of all three peaks, but there's a way to get to the highest-ish point without trespassing for all of them. Not much to say - a beautiful day, the weather was gorgeous, and I felt perfectly fine hiking all of these alone. A nice big loop, about 7.5 miles out of it and 1700' total gain. No fees for parking, and the signs were pretty clear? There are more trails out there in the desert than are marked on the signs at the trailhead and on Natural Atla..." — psychikingjes • Feb 26, 2022
"After doing Lookout Mt. I summited North Mt. I saw a coyote right at the start of the trail. Lots of people were working out on the road leading up to the towers, but I was the only one that went to the true summit at that time." — ZachTeich • Mar 15, 2017
"Hit North Mountain from the visitor center, following trail 100 to the turn off. about a 1/2 mile later, the trail turns into an asphalt road that relentlessly goes up. Great workout, but is usually pretty really busy." — lawrencebaker • Sep 8, 2016
