"What a traverse ! Most of it is quite loose rugged and unpleasant but the ridge definitely goes , quite easily at that. Didn’t encounter anything harder than class 3 (up and around the fortress) . Phone died on the way back so add an extra 5-6 miles on the return. I drew a line on the final summit push on fortress as it may look intimidating at first , it is real easy getting up there. "Hike to "Cartwheels in the Sun" inspired by local athlete Paula Raimondi. First Henderson hike of the season with McCullough highs in the 70s and it was beautiful, although it's never not windy here so that's to be expected. I plan on knocking out the entire north & south McCullough ranges eventually ... today was my first time to Cartwheels and North McCullough Peaks. Cartwheels was a good challenge with lots of scree and scrambling class 3 or 4 depending how you get there. I was the 2nd entry in the registry ... makes me wonder how many ppl have ever been there. Thanks to Paula for naming this peak and posting the route. " — DudeAlmighty • Sep 29, 2021
"Failed at my CITS objective but got 3 peaks, 12 miles and 3,500’ gain. Fracture Ridge, North McCullough and Park Peak. Some gain was from exploring and having to go back up hill to find my gloves, then losing one after that and searching for it. Uggg. " — paula.raimondi • Feb 7, 2019
"Harlan Stockman let me tag along on his Mountaineer Club 4 Peak Hike (Black, Fracture Ridge, North McCullough & Park Peak) It was on and off trail with a traverse along loose rocky volcanic terrain through cactus and scratchy shrubs. The views were spectacular! I’ve done this trek once before last Feb. and forgot how difficult it was but I shaved 2.5 hrs off my original time. I felt very tired and slow early on but Harlan kept us on a steady uphill pace. We made quick work of the route by jogging, hiking and scampering. 5:10hr, 11.5 miles and 3,600’ ish gain. Thanks for the workout Harlan! I’m beat!" — paula.raimondi • Dec 16, 2017
"I've always wanted to do this Traverse so I invited Shin to join me. We ascended the Black Mtn Peak on the New trail that goes up the NW ridge, then traversed to Fracture Ridge Peak, No McCullough Peak, then Descended a ridge and did Park Peak on the way Back to cars. 4 Peaks, 11 miles, 3,400' gain. Long hard day in the heat (although it is winter it was hot today). We saw a Mom Bighorn and a tiny baby that followed her like a champ on some steep cliffs. We also passed what I believe to be the bones of a lost dog and also a pile of bones of another animal on a steep cliff. Views along the ridge were amazing. " — paula.raimondi • Feb 9, 2017
