"Has been 3 months since I've managed to tick off a Welsh Nuttall. Found this one a 'struggle', looked a doddle on the map! Wet and boggy from the start line with a fair bit of up and down between summits, amounting to about 1000m of ascent overall. Only see a trail runner near Waun-oer all day.
I decided to wear my Salomon boots instead of one of my pairs of La Sportiva due to the boggy, wet nature of this mountain range. What I didn't take into account was the near-vertical descent off Waun-oer up to Cribin Fawr. There is a section of slippery rock to scramble down, and I have no confidence in the Salomon boots. They are lethal, hence after a couple of 'accidents' where the 'edge' came a little too close for my liking, they were relegated from being used on anything other than wet, muddy, 'flattish' hikes! As ever, scrambling back up this on the way back felt safer!
Some brilliant views of Cadair Idris, Rhinogs, and the Arenigs from up here. I doubt I'll ever summit Mynydd yr Hewyrch again. However, Cribin Fawr from the A470 layby, and over to Waun-oer and back is definitely a great day out having started from both sides of the mountains now.
