I did Mud Mtn as part of a loop hitting all the peaks in the "Muds". Those peaks being: Peak 5482, 5505, 5510 and Mud Mtn.

Access to the mountain is via Mud Canyon Road which starts near the Sierra County Fairgrounds in Williamsburg. Take the Williamsburg exit off I-25 onto Broadway (US-85). Near the fairgrounds turn left onto Hyde Ave, then left again onto Mud Canyon Rd. The road quickly turns to a graded gravel surface and remains so until it leaves the maintained road and heads up an arroyo (33.1466, 107.3220). Maps show a road but that's no longer the case for at least a half mile. Best to have a HC 4WD vehicle as the arroyo has a soft gravel bottom in places along with some uneven areas. The "road" eventually leaves the arroyo and becomes a road, ending at an old mining operation. Mud Mountain is less than a mile away. Best to avoid this area in the summer months due to heat.
