"Did the loop counter clockwise: Corral-spring-poverty flats-jackass-blue ridge-Hobbs-middle ridge-frog lake-flat frog-corral - the single track sections were wonderful, yet sadly, the minority of the hike. The old ranch roads were kind of brutal either up or straight downs with only a few flats to catch one’s breathe. but much better counterclockwise. Hobbs was particularly heinous, hence the choice to take frog lake and flat frog back to get off it. A side hike up Jackass Peak (easy) for s*its and giggles. Not my favorite hike. Don’t plan on doing it again." — whispersiren • Apr 14, 2021

"It was kind of a drab, overcast/cloudy day, but I got a few decent photos. The Shortcut trail up Hobbs Road lives up to its reputation as one of the hardest trails in the Bay Area. My recommendation would be to do the four-peak loop at Mount Diablo if you're looking for a hard hike in the Bay Area. It's prettier and more fun, and roughly the same overall difficulty. I'll probably return to Mt Sizer, but it's not my favorite hard hike." — sareine • May 31, 2020

"Backpacked into Skeels, off Hobbs fire road and hit the summit the next morning. Unfortunately, my partner twisted his ankle, so couldn't make this one, but I'll go back. May is a great time to peak, as the grass is green and wild flowers are in abundance. Creeks are also flowing (no problem with crossings). Also, stop by Frog Lake...there are a ton of bullfrogs and lot's fish." — colleenmarie512 • May 6, 2018

"Expected a hot dry day, but some nice clouds kept it at perfect temps. Saw 7 turkeys at frog pond and had such a nice hike that I extended my out and back to a loop through Poverty Flats." — Christopher • Jul 7, 2014
