"I took the west firebreak from a turnout just east of the junction of Angeles Crest and Upper Big Tujunga. The firebreak starts very steep and mellows and then re-steepens before the first false summit upon gaining the ridge. The first summit, which some may confuse as the actual peak, has ribbons tied to a bush, with a weird assortment of branches, but no register. It has a good line of sight to the east at another high point along the ridge: that high point a tad higher than this first summit and is the true Mt. Sally summit. You just follow the very gently undulating ridge over a couple minor false summits, and there you have it. he summit has a rock pile and a register. The only challenges are some steep spots, some minor bushwhacking and dead fall hopping, and dodging some dead Poodle Dog Bush, as the firebreak is overgrown in spots. Most of the time, there is an evident use path along the firebreak, but it does get lost in the brush at times. If you follow the ridge in a roughly east by northeast direction, you will reach it. Views of the Mt. Wilson and front range as well as the backcountry are sweet. The route up the west firebreak is about 1.2 mi one way, for a 2..." — brianpowell • Oct 21, 2018
"If Peakery was Rotten Tomatoes this one would get one of those green splotches.
Parked at the Silver Moccasin trailhead and went up the west ridge. No official trailhead as it's a use trail.
It manages to throw irksome routefinding, prickly bushwhacking, and even loose scree at you. All the while you never stray far from the 2 with it's constant whine of over-throttled cars and bikes. Nice summit view, but that's easily bested by dozens of other peaks in the region.
It's peaks like this that make me wish I had better considered my pastimes. For what purpose would I want to spend a Sunday pushing through painful bushes for a most random hill?
Actually, honestly, it's easily avoided by doing some research. This one's only for the pathological completists." — JustinB • Mar 25, 2018
"This hike virtually had no trail. Most of it was overgrown with chaparral and large spiky bushes. I followed the deer tracks and droppings. There was a large grassy field towards the top so the tracks helped." — rickb • Feb 5, 2018
"I had the mountain to myself, Then again, that's how its been all day. No complaints. The use trail climbs a ridgeline to the summit. It was only slightly overgrown in places with the typical good views of the surrounding high points." — MikeTeeples • Dec 2, 2017
"East Ridge/West Ridge Loop: Parked at the Silver Moccasin Trailhead and walked up Angeles Crest Highway to the 45 mile marker. Climbed east ridge to summit, then came down the west ridge firebreak that lets out 50 yards away from the Silver Moccasin Trail. Had 3/4" of snow the whole way." — laphil • Jan 25, 2017
"This was a fun hike on a mild December day. The hike was longer than I was expecting, due to a number of false summits, but not a long hike. Excellent views from the ridge and from the summit." — klotito • Dec 4, 2016
"Somehow I thought that this was be just a quick zip up and back. Nope...several false summits make this a bit more involved than that. I was *sure* I was done several times...nope! Throw in a warm day...and there's no shade...and I wasn't exactly zipping. On the return, I took a couple of wrong ridges to the south; keep that in mind, and tend to the right/north to get back speedily to the parking area." — HikerMark • Aug 30, 2014
