As far as I can determine, Mount Nebo is the 13th highest named summit in Kansas. My son, Marshall, and I approached Mount Nebo from the south on an excellent gravel road that passes directly to the east of the summit. We gained a lot of elevation during this drive, but once we parked the car we were basically on level ground surrounded by vast Kansas prairie. We had a difficult time locating the summit benchmark, but Marshall finally saw a survey post along a fence row to the west. At the base of the survey post was benchmark "No. 2" with an arrow pointing directly east. By following this directional aid, we quickly stumbled upon the actual summit benchmark embedded securely in an elevated, square, cement base and we both wondered how we missed seeing it during our initial search. At this spot, my GPS read 37.28059 N and 99.76203 W with 14 feet of accuracy. During our visit a truck stopped to find out what we were doing there. After we explained our climbing goal they seemed unconcerned, even though they commented that it was private property. There are no posted signs, however, and there isn't even a fence row like most of the Kansas high points we have visited. We felt quite comfortable visiting this spot.
