"A very slow, long hike trying to hit several peaks in one afternoon. The weather was nice from a recent thunderstorm, but got hot towards the end. The Wichitas are at their absolute best in terms of wildflowers because of the recent mild weather and large amount of rain. It was like walking across a vision of what the prairie once was and could be again. Use tons of DEET on the refuge now - the ticks are wicked awful. The bluestem and other grasses are about at the height where bushwacking will be impractical. " — danielmartin • Jun 3, 2023
"Headed out from Sunset Pool. Came across several longhorns along the way. Met up with a buffalo just as we were about to start the ascent. Of course it was right in the path of where we wanted to go. Each time we got close, it ran further up the trail, still in the way. Eventually we managed to skirt around it and began the climb up.There were lots of boulders to climb and hop, a few narrow ledges to navigate, even had to use the cedar tree ladder near the end. The view from the top was magnificent. Winds were gusting so hard at times you'd have to catch your balance." — JASTA11 • Feb 4, 2012
