This day, 11/24/19, was the day to finally up the ante in my post-accident hiking I wanted to up the challenge factor as I have not hiked more than a 6 mile hike with 1,300' gain since before my June 9th hiking fall near Mt. Wilson. I decided to try at least Peak 5166 and Lawlor and leave Strawberry Peak as a possibility. I parked at Red Box, crossed Angeles Crest, and picked up Barley Flats Road, which at first also is the same path as the Strawberry Peak Trail until after 1/3 mile, the old road continues straight and becomes overgrown, and the Strawberry Peak trail curls left and heads more uphill. I then found the saddle between Mt. Lawlor and Peak 5166, turned left onto the firebreak which crosses the Strawberry Peak Trail (SPT). The firebreak is partially overgrown, so some wading through thorny ceanothus and spiky yucca is inevitable. Then, after a short while, the firebreak steepens and is more conspicuous. It is a short hike to the top of 5166, but there is one small false summit very shortly before the true summit. In a couple of spots, there is a cable running through the firebreak, so watch that you don't trip on it. The summit has a wooden pole, and 2 tiny rock ducks. After the summit, I returned to the SPT and followed it to the Strawberry/Lawlor Saddle (S/LS). I then turned sharply right and followed the use path to Lawlor. It was steep and did have a few class-2 scrambles, but it was not too bad. The soil was damp after last week's rain/snow, so the terrain was not as slippery and dusty as when it's dry. The summit of Lawlor also has a wooden pole. It may have had a register, but the only signs of a past register is a few broken pens in the summit rock pile. I love the views on Lawlor! I could see Sandstone Peak (3,111') in the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County clearly! I then returned to the S/LS. I was tired after Lawlor, but started up the Strawberry Peak use trail anyways, slowly still deciding whether or not to follow through and reach Strawberry Peak. After going up and down the first steep section, and up a bit more, I decided to commit myself to finishing Strawberry Peak and was tired, but kept slogging up the very steep use trail, which gains roughly 1,000' in 3/4 mi. I ended up meeting a party that came from Colby Canyon over the class-3 west ridge and offered to shuttle them back from Red Box to Colby so they did not have to climb down those class-3 portions, which they were not excited about doing. The use trail from S/LS is class 1 with a few minor class-2 spots, so it is a much easier alternative for them!! Overall, the hike was between 7-8 miles with 2,400'+ gain, so I am beginning to regain my stamina again! I do have video on the hike for YouTube, but since it is a 14-part mega series, I will post links to the near summit and summit segments here.
