"My first time staying at an Appalachian Mountain Club hut. I parked at the Great Gulf Trailhead around 2:30pm on July 15th, walked about half a mile up Rt. 16 to the Nineteen Mile Brook Trailhead, and began the ascent to Carter Notch. I was immediately met with a garter snake slithering across the trail, but didn’t encounter any other wildlife that day. Although the trees shaded most of the direct heat from the sun, the intense humidity slowed my pace considerably and quickly turned me into a sweaty mess. Luckily, the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is a very mild trail, mostly rock-free and smoothly graded as it follows the path of the rushing Nineteen Mile Brook. Some occasional bridge-assisted water crossings broke up the climb, and the afternoon sun shining through the green canopy gave the trail an overall tranquil quality. After the Carter Dome Trail splits off to the left, the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail becomes slightly rougher with more rocks and the occasional steeper climb. However, there is still no sustained steep climbing until about a tenth of a mile before cresting Carter Notch. Some of the sunlight I had been losing in the shadow of Wildcat Mountain returned as I began the..." — JCalautti • Jul 16, 2025
"Very warm day on Carter Ridge, registered 78 degrees on the summit of Carter Dome. No wind to speak of either. But there were great views all day, especially from Mt Hight. Today was a great day from birds, they were very active and it felt like we were climbing Warbler Dome. Here are the different warblers we heard: Magnolia, Black-throated Green, Canada, Black-throated Blue, Yellow and Blackpoll. Plus Ruby and Golden Crowned Kinglets. For thrushes we had Swainson's, Bicknell, Hermit and Oven birds. Also Winter Wrens, American Redstarts, Boreal Chikadees and a rare Yellow Bellied Flycatcher." — Alohabuffy • Jun 3, 2024
"A super windy day to hike. No bug problems! We went up 19 Mile Brook to Carter Dome Tr. We bagged Height on the way up. So worth it. Height should be the NE50F not Carter Dome. IMO, Height offers one of the best 360 degree views in the whites. We started with 55 degree temperature and finished with 68. 10 mile total hike with 8 hours of time to complete the trip." — GreggC • Jul 31, 2021
"A Wildcat Carter traverse with the girlfriend picking me up on the Imp Face Tr. Beautiful day out with a chilly wind. Felt great going up the Wildcat Ridge Tr out of Pinkham Notch. Also got to visit Mt Hight and Imp Face. Gridded out 3 peaks of the 5 today." — newenglandwarrior • Jul 28, 2021
"Molly and I went for the Carter Range today. Both of us needed them this month. We parked at 19 Mile Brook and walked down to Joe Dodge. We then cut through to reach Imp Tr. We then headed up. We eventually reached the ridge and headed to Lethe first. After tagging the summit, we went up to Middle Carter and tagged that summit. We then headed over and tagged South Carter. Next, we dropped down to Zeta Pass, then up Mt Hight. Been awhile since I was last on Hight. Lovely views today. We then went over to Carter Dome. Molly also wanted to tie up a loose end and grab Wildcat A. So we dropped down into Carter Notch. Still feeling decent, we made our way up A peak and got it. We then doubled back into Carter Notch and took 19 Mile Brook Tr out to the car. " — newenglandwarrior • Nov 8, 2020
"Solo hike up Nineteen Mile Brook to Carter Dome Trail to Mount Hight. Then over to Carter Dome. Hiked down the Rainbow Trail to Wild River Trail to Wildcat River Trail to Carter Notch Hut. Nineteen Mile Brook Trail back to trailhead." — dmcosker • Oct 3, 2020
"Hiked up via 19 Mile Brook Trail to Carter Notch Hut. Topped off water at the Hut and proceeded on the steep climb up to Carter Dome. Great lookout point looking over at Wildcat A and down in to the Notch. After Carter Dome hit Mount Hight which has the best views in the whole Carter-Moriah Range. From there traversed over to South Carter and then Middle Carter. Hiked down via North Carter Trail to the Imp Trail and out via Camp Dodge. It was a short road walk on Rte. 16 back to the trailhead. Fantastic day marking off 41, 42, and 43 of the NH 48." — dmcosker • Jul 18, 2020
"Started off the day at the Carter-Moriah trailhead and made our way up the 4.1 moderate trail to Moriah and the AT. From there we crossed the ridge through the Carters and stayed at the Carter Notch hut (another great hut team!) The hike was hot and dry and incredibly beautiful - that last drop to the is a looong one and we just made the dinner bell!" — deb-and-rob • Jun 16, 2018
"Super nice warm day, mostly in the 40s. Lots of sunshine. Tops of the northern pressie were all shrouded from Mt Hight. But by the time we got to Carter Dome, they had lifted. Beautiful blue sky and not a bit of breeze on Carter Dome. We were the only ones up there." — Alohabuffy • Mar 1, 2018
"After Carter Dome, we hit Mount Hight. Great views from the summit. Today was a Presi kind of day. Somewhat warm and no wind. We hung out at the summit for a bit, having lunch and enjoying the views. " — newenglandwarrior • Mar 26, 2016
