"Finally worked up the nerve for this one. From camp at Upper Boy Scout Lake via the (awful) Rockwell Variation. E Ridge was as advertised - use trail with minimal exposure for the first portion followed by exposed slabby ledges on the N side before starting the steep climb up to the E summit. The slabby section was the crux for me - not so much climbing as sketchy walking. The rest was fun scrambling over very solid rock. Also did Tunnabora and Carillon. Tulainyo Lake is spectacular!" — klotito • Oct 9, 2021
"Fun loop for a full day solo adventure: started at Whitney Portal, climbed Mount Carillion and Mount Russell’s East Ridge via North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, descended via South Face of Russell, down to Whitney-Russell Col and Iceberg Lake. 13 hours car to car and lots of great memories. Recent light snowfall made the ridge a little tricky today - ran into a party that was simul-climbing it but decided to bail due to the slippery conditions " — danishclimber • May 24, 2021
"After summiting Mt Whitney via Mountaineer's Route, left Upper Boy Scout Lake on beautiful blue sky morning and bagged Mt Carillon after returning from Mt Russell. Easy Class 2/3 scramble from the saddle. 20 mins." — DrBoz • May 25, 2014
"Did this as a dayhike. Drove up from Vegas Friday night. Got a couple hours of sleep in the Jeep, then up and at 'em at 330am! We took the Rockwell Variation of the East Ridge route up to Russell, which avoided the huge scree slope & had more climbing instead. After bagging Russell & basking in the sun for a bit, a couple of us bagged Carillon too on the way back. " — Kevin • Oct 5, 2013
"Reportedly a "gimme" SPS peak for anyone already doing Russell. I'd have to agree, took about 15 extra minutes to summit from the Russel-Carillon Col. The summit block was a short class 3 move that was fun. The really fun part of my day came after the summit, when I dropped off the north face of Carillon with my full pack to Tulainyo Lake, hiked cross country through talus to Wallace Lakes, and eventually picked up a trail to meet up with the JMT at the Wallace Creek junction where I spent the night. A really long day." — Christopher • Jun 21, 2012
