"Walked up with mate Hutty. Used the track to the trig beacon starting from Macarthur Road. Had nice wx. Noticed some nice tree specimens above where the old time logging stopped." — glennj • Jul 22, 2023
"This climb was for a Summits on the Air activation - summit designation for SOTA, ZL3/WC-667
I parked at the old school location about half a mile from where you begin the ascent. Closer parking is possible, but since I was driving a borrowed car that seemed like the safest option.
The first 20 minutes of the climb or so is easy, as it’s all through paddocks. Then you go into the bush. There is a small gate you open and go through. After that there is a pretty well defined track. But after about 15 minutes of walking that disappears and you must look for and follow white markers nailed to trees.
Its like that all the way to the summit. It’s typical west coast rain forest and hard going in places. The summit is marked by a very large trig.
The entire tramp from the road to the top should take no more than 2 hours. Pay attention to the markers and try not to get off the track... going both up and down." — neilsmith • Dec 25, 2017
"I used the track that goes up through farmland and regenerating cutover native bush to the trig beacon on one of the high points. From near the trig there are views out over the Kowhitirangi plain toward Hokitika. A swath of bush has been felled to reveal the vista." — glennj • Feb 15, 2013
