"I was in the mood for some easy hiking before poking around in the Buckhorn Campground to admire the huge Incense-Cedars, so I decided to revisit 2 peaks I did back in 2017, Peak 7118 and Buckhorn Peak (Akawie). I never logged 7118 because it was not on the site then. I parked at a large turnout on Angeles Crest Hwy. at mile marker 57.55, between Cloudburst Summit and Buckhorn Day Use Area, right near Mt. Waterman Ski Area. There is no trail to 7118, so I hiked up the slope to the northeast a relatively short distance to the summit. This time, I forgot to take any photos on top, but I did record video, so check out my YouTube links here. After 7118, I went down the east slope and picked up a use trail that would lead me to the very nearby Mt. Akawie (Buckhorn Peak) and made the short ascent to its summit. I did remember to take some pictures on Akawie in addition to the videos. I followed the use trail back to an old roadbed leading back to a Turnout on Angeles Crest that was only 50' away from the turnout I parked at! It was a mellow hike, and it would be perfect in summer since the area is well-forested. This time, there is a new summit register on Mt. Akawie, placed ear..." — brianpowell • Nov 17, 2019
"Quick, easy HPS peak. Obviously do it as part of a group. Nice summit with register.
Part of a sweep of some HPS peaks I needed in the area: Hillyer, Winston Peak, Winston Ridge, Mount Akawie, and Kratka Ridge." — JustinB • Jun 27, 2018
"Very short and easy/mellow hike. I took a slightly different route than most. I hiked cross-country from near Cloudburst Summit (7,018') on Angeles Crest. I went over nearby Peak 7,118' then descended cross-country to a saddle, found a dirt road there which I followed for a short time. I then found the use trail up to Mt. Akawie (Buckhorn Peak) (7,283'). The trip is a little longer, but still very short. The air is fresh with Jeffrey Pines. There are some small boulders on top to climb, but I could not find the summit register. There are some views through the Pines to the Santa Ana Mountains, Palomar Mountain, and even all the way to Cuyamaca Peak in central San Diego County. Akawie is a nice short jaunt perfect for a warm-up or cool-off hike." — brianpowell • Jul 28, 2017
"After hitting Winston Peak we headed up Mt. Akawie which was a very beautiful hike and I found the summit to be a great area to come camp one night with some friends. So one night soon we shall do that. Another tree riddled summit making it hard to enjoy any views. Mt. Akawie marks Peak #61 of 100 in 2014." — 1-with-Nature • Aug 25, 2014
