It all started with a drunken conversation between friends during a covid lockdown in 2021 - "Let's climb a mountain!" About 6 months later, after some research and accumulating the minimum required kit, I'm driving to the English Lake District for a week's holiday. There we climbed our first ever mountain, Helvellyn. It was the end of September, and despite all the research, the significance of wind speed had eluded me. There was rain, clag, and ridiculous wind coming from the opposite side of the mountain, luckily. With no amazing views, it was a dash to the summit shelter, and then onto the trig point before hastily retreating down the mountain to Thirlmere. Since that day, I've become rather obsessed with summiting mountains and hills. I barely used to walk anywhere; from the car to my front door or office was about as far as I regularly went. I'm now approaching the end of my Welsh Nuttall challenge, and intend to complete all the Welsh Marilyns as well. As for the English Nuttalls and Marilyns, let's call those a 'life' goal! I'm hoping for a few visits to Scotland over the next couple of years, but bagging some higher summits in Europe would be amazing. less
