A pleasant evening dog walk up a minor hill with great coastal views to Skye, Plockton and Applecross. Meall na h-Airde is girdled by dense forestry on three sides and rough moorland on the other.
Began on a good forestry track with lots of fungi. This terminated at a clearing just 700m from the summit where it seemed I’d have to admit defeat with further progress firmly barred by an impenetrable screen of prickly ‘Christmas trees’. Backtracking, after about 50m I found a way up through less dense forestry to gain the heather/tussock grass and bog Myrtle moorland above. The actual summit has a small cairn covering an Ordnance Survey trig bolt. Rather than return the same way I traversed a couple of km to pick up a poor hill track down to Achintraid. On the way I crossed a deer fence which I wondered might be a quick route down to the road (but decided not to try it as I didn’t want to risk coming up against more impassable forestry)" — davidb • Sep 13, 2021
