"Still a good snow cover above 8500 feet depending on location and aspect. I figured Martis would be fairly snow free which it was. Only patches in shady areas both on the trail and on Martis road. Not a soul on my way in then just one young couple on my way out. Oddly I found a bear barrel sitting next to the trail, later a pair of sunglasses and a can bug spray in the trail. Bopped up to Picnic rock on my way out for one final view." — Nimblefoot • May 7, 2026
"Afternoon trudge to the fire lookout then onto the summit. A lot of old tracks out there both on and off the trail as if folks were wandering around trying to find the trail. The crusty snow and bare booters punching through the tracks made the snowshoeing a bit interesting. Need more snow, the nice fluffy stuff, and plenty of it.

"Getting in a climb of Martis Peak while the ground is totally bare and before a snowstorm comes in late Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Nice unseasonably warm temps and full sunshine meant shorts on the bottom and light layers on top. Encountered mostly mountain bikers all day, even Moms with the kiddos blasting down the trail, then realized it was a holiday so no school or work for folks. On my back down I bopped up to Picnic Rock where I began to encounter hikers getting great views with less effort." — Nimblefoot • Nov 11, 2025
"Short hike on the TRT out of Brockway Summit before the day heated up too much. Took the spur trail up to Picnic Rock view on my way in. Only saw one patch of snow just beyond the fire tower. Some of the backpackers looked a bit wilted from the heat and it wasn’t the hottest part of the day yet." — Nimblefoot • Jul 17, 2023
"My wife and I out for a short hike in the AM. TRT out of Brockway Summit for an O & B of 10.5 miles which included the spur trail to the splendid view. Most hikers did just the view for an easy hike. Nice views again from the fire tower with Lassen way in the background. Bopped up to the summit before heading out." — Nimblefoot • Jul 21, 2022
"Trip with NorCal Women Adventurers. We packed snowshoes, and while we encountered a good amount of snow, it didn't necessitate the use of snowshoes. Weather was great, a bit windy in spots. Luckily we had someone with us who knew the route in the snow, else that would have been a challenge. The fire lookout was a good lunch spot, the summit itself a little underwhelming. Fantastic views from the lookout. Only saw one other person on the trail past Picnic Rock/trail spur for the lookout." — kaylam87 • Apr 28, 2018
"Sharon and I hiked up to the fire lookout then the summit with Colleen B. who is in training for an upcoming adventure trip in British Columbia. Afterwards we headed onto the TRT. This time there was a volunteer on site to help us identify objects in the distance. Could see snow fields on Lassen." — Nimblefoot • Jul 21, 2016
"We drove about a mile on Martis Peak Road and parked where it meets up with the TRT, then hiked 3.5 miles the rest of the way to the summit. Beautiful hike and spectacular views from the summit!" — heidivw • Jun 20, 2014
"We climbed to the summit then visited the fire lookout cabin before heading out the TRT to Rose Knob. As a bonus I checked out the rock outcrops that are the current HP of Placer Co." — Nimblefoot • Jul 25, 2013
