2.19.2021~Solo, Lizard Head, Lizard Back and Lizard Horn. 10 miles, 2,700’ gain. Following in the footsteps of the great and fearless, top mountaineers in our area (Laszlo H., Ed F., Luba and Chris M.~in 2018) who first conquered these 3 geological features that tower above the Mighty Colorado River in Southern NV. They have the 1st known documented ascents.....I started From the North Fork of Boy Scout Canyon instead of The Canyon Mesa Approach because I wanted to see if I could get to the Lizard parts from there (and I had already been to the Lizard’s Head and Back from that direction on a separate trip.) From afar, it looks to be guarded by cliffs but I found a break. The Lizard Head and Back are a straightforward class 2+ hike. I didn’t like the visuals of dropping down to the Horn (from the Head) so I descended and circumnavigated around a different way, which added a lot of workout extra credit! Oy!!! (Don’t do that, go from Head, then directly down to the Horn.) The Horn is about 300’ below the Head. The final ascent up the Lizard Horn’s tower was a short-ish Class 3+/4 exposed climb, then a short exposed traverse to the HP. It took me a while to gain courage. I went up and down each section until I was convinced I would be ok. I was alone so I made sure I was super careful and had each part memorized. It’s mostly firm rock but some pieces broke off so be careful. I didn’t bring a helmet or webbing but I would suggest packing some if you plan to do this peak. I wished I had it as it was creepy and scary. It’s extremely exposed and a fall or mistake would be fatal. I did 9 miles in this area yesterday so by the end of this trek, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. These are a must do trio and I highly recommend them. What thrill ride. The views were obscene. The River was so green. I’m not posting my track on Peakbagger so please contact Chris Meyer, from the Las Vegas Mountaineer Club for route info. His approach is from Canyon Mesa and my approach was from the North Fork of Boy Scout Canyon. If you had a 4WD, you could do my route from the BSC Trailhead and it would only be 5-6 miles round trip & 1,000’ or more less elevation gain. Email me @ [email protected] if you want my track, but just know it’s not the most efficient way to get there, was exploratory and self indulgent. I drank 1.5 liters of water, ate one Jack in the box egg roll and one McDonalds Blueberry Muffin. This route has Canyon rambling, wash running, scrambling, bouldering and rock climbing. Great Day!!!
