Lets just say I did this the long way. I covered 40ks in just over 5 hours. It was good training for an Ultra that I will be running in a month, but it's not the route I would recommend. Half of my run could have been cut out if I had only driven to the picnic spot at the furthest end of the two Steenbras dams.
From the end of the dams there is a jeep track running up a valley and towards Kogelberg Peak. The track passes the peak on a contour about 520m lower than the summit and about 2km away from it. This means that there is quite a climb to the summit still. unfortunately an old path that traverses the peak (and I assume summits the peak at some stage.) is no longer in use and has become heavily overgrown. I followed it as far as a gulley where it became too overgrown to follow. The suggested route is the route I came down on. There is a clear slope running up the back of the Peak with no ridges or cliffs that need to be crossed on the way. There is however a knife edge close to the summit. Like most knife edges the leeward side is a lot more forgiving but one should always be careful of the 1000m gorge on the other side of the ridgeline.

The route I took is from within the City of Cape Towns Seenbras Dam Reserve. I always try to get home early and so I ran the flat section in the dark for the first hour and a half. Apparently it is quite difficult to get permission to summit this peak if you ask for it. I did not see anyone to ask along the way though. The whole experience was quite surreal. There is a really good jeep track which runs past the summit and tarred roads around the dams yet I did not see anybody for more than 6 hours.

Hi desdeary. I took this route the other day . Up the old path to the gully. I suspect the path was opened up by fire but is growing closed again. Did you go straight up from the gully? I would appreciate more info please. Thanks a lot.

Yes Peter, once I realized the path was becoming too overgrown and was going past the summit (it’s probably a traverse of an old hiking trails), I did make a B line to the top up a gully. It was really sketchy though and I wouldn’t suggest it. I would suggest taking a straight line from the jeep track on the Upper Steenbras dam side (north side) of the peak. Just be aware of the big drop off on the False Bay side close to the summit.
