"Followed the instructions of @mcthinusbrink word for word which made the bundu bashing up a little easier. Tough day up on the mountain due to heat but fortunately clear skies with incredible visibility hiking up, and from the summit." — davidcase • Feb 27, 2022
"We had an amazing day out on the mountain, on a beautiful route. 15km out and back (+-8h)
Route Description:
We started our long day out after parking opposite the Kogel Bay Resort, in front of a few buildings with set-out parking for visitors on a grass stretch (outside the fenced area). Following the Klipspringer trail for a short while, a big rock and some cairns showed the way to the left and up a gradual long climb with a fair amount of zig-zags (on the first section of zig-zags, there is a shortcut straight up the mountain that should be avoided, as it is causing erosion). After about 700m of elevation gain, you will meet up with a jeep track on the plateau. Follow the jeep track until you see a few cairns on the right side of the jeep track, leading on to the mountain (from here there is no path, following cairns and slight bundu bashing is what will lie ahead for the next 2-3km). Following the cairns into the mountain will lead you to an overgrown straight path which has clearly been man-made quite a while ago. Keep an eye out for a big cairn on the right side of the old path, as this shows the way right, straight up the mountain. This is the steepest section, with som..." — mcthinusbrink • Dec 31, 2021
"What a spectacular hike! Last 2.5 to 3km is all off trail and extremely steep. Knees going to feel the downhill tomorrow! The view were next level and the day was just about perfect. Another peak tagged. Have to pinch myself every time I do these hikes. We are so blessed in the area we live! " — Kortstok • Sep 18, 2021
"We started the hike on a nice overcast morning the peak was hidden within the clouds the entire trip. Once reaching the Jeep truck we followed it for roughly a kilometre and then branched off via a marking on the map called 'crack' which we wanted to explore on route to the top. The crack is a 20 to 30 m long deep crack which opens up perpendicular to the summit and is most likely formed by water erosion. I ventured in it as I expected there was a route through but I quickly found that there were numerous loosely wedged chock stones overhead. Jess turned back at the start (smart move) and I continued until I hit a dead end about 20m in, where from I had to do a bit of a vertical rock climb to get out.
As we near to the summit we ventured into the clouds and a long a narrow ridge line to the peak. It looked awesome with the cloud whipping over the ridgeline and visibility was down to about 20m.
We took a more direct route back to the Jeep track over unpleasant loose rocks and then rejoined the klipspringer trail back down to the car." — CraigBurnsStellenbosch • Mar 14, 2021
"Lets just say I did this the long way. I covered 40ks in just over 5 hours. It was good training for an Ultra that I will be running in a month, but it's not the route I would recommend. Half of my run could have been cut out if I had only driven to the picnic spot at the furthest end of the two Steenbras dams.
From the end of the dams there is a jeep track running up a valley and towards Kogelberg Peak. The track passes the peak on a contour about 520m lower than the summit and about 2km away from it. This means that there is quite a climb to the summit still. unfortunately an old path that traverses the peak (and I assume summits the peak at some stage.) is no longer in use and has become heavily overgrown. I followed it as far as a gulley where it became too overgrown to follow. The suggested route is the route I came down on. There is a clear slope running up the back of the Peak with no ridges or cliffs that need to be crossed on the way. There is however a knife edge close to the summit. Like most knife edges the leeward side is a lot more forgiving but one should always be careful of the 1000m gorge on the other side of the ridgeline.
The route I took is from within the..." — desdeary • Apr 16, 2016
