"I met the great great grandson of Masaku. The region is called machakos after Masaku, who was a kamba chief. The history of Machakos Town dates back to 1889 when the Imperial British East Africa Company (IBEA), the predecessor of the British Colonial Authority in Kenya established their first upcountry capital and centre of operation in Machakos Town. The Whiteman named Machakos Town after the leader/chief Masaku who welcomed them to Machakos." — Alexander-veronicah-Munyao • Nov 15, 2012
"We hiked for Hiking Heights for Higher Education, an awareness initiative for the Ignite Excellence Foundation. We also celebrated my wife's 45th Birthday at the summit, complete with cake & champagne after a grueling 4 1/2 hr hike from McKinders Camp in cold, windy but very clear conditions. We had to hike thru a forest fire(s) which passed just 15 minutes above us on day two. Kind of scary but a really neat experience." — MichaelGingerich • Mar 16, 2012
"Started at Sirimon Gate late after a problematic start with a broken alternator and gastro illness. Spent the night at first camp and headed up Mackinder Valley to Shipton's Camp, where we spent the second night. Left at 3AM to hike up to Pt. Lenana in order to see the sunrise. The 19 degree temperature on the equator was fun and made the climb up the scree easier before the sun rose. Hardest physical challenge I've done." — srphilip • Feb 9, 2003
"Expedition to Kenya and Tanzania with Rhona Fraser, Robin Howie, Geraldine Howie, Janet Lambert (all fellow members of the Cairngorm Club). We engaged the help of John Temple for Mount Kenya. We used the Chogoria approach route. From Hall Tarns John and I went ahead to the Austrian Hut. John remained at the hut while I made the ascent of Point Lenana (4985m, 16355feet). I wanted to be sure of reaching at least one of the tops. I looked across the Lewis Glacier to the cliffs of Nelion where mist came and went, accentuating the steepness and giving it an air of impregnability. Could I really climb it? Back in the hut we met Gordon and Robert, two lads from England, and agreed to climb together so we had two ropes of two." — peter43 • Jan 1, 1992
