For the second time in a row in the San Bernardinos, I had a totally different peak in mind but blew past it on my hike! My intent was to hike to Mill Peak (6,670') from the lower Exploration Trailhead off Keller Peak Road. It was supposed to be a very short hike (just under 4 miles r/t), but I kept following the Exploration Trail, apparently missing the junction with a dirt road, as I had followed the trail for quite a while, long enough that I started to run into Bush Chinquapin (Chrysolepis sempervirens), normally found above 7,000'! After the plant became very common, I also saw Keller Peak really close at hand, so again, I changed my plans accordingly. I then decided to hike to Slide Peak as I have never been to it, and it is very close to Keller, and I have visited Keller before. I followed the Exploration Trail to the Children's Forest area on Keller Peak Road, took a break as it was warm that day. After I was rested, I climbed up a gated dirt service track right next to the Children's Forest to summit Slide Peak, where Snow Valley's ski lift tops out! I then decided to traverse the saddle and ridge between Slide and Keller, and there is a worn foot path that leads along the ridge and down to Keller Peak Rd at 1/2 mile from Keller's summit. I followed the hot asphalt road to the lookout tower on Keller and took a nice break up there. I have been to Keller 3 times in my life. The first was almost 24 years ago when I was in Junior High, summer 1995, when my uncle took me and my cousin most of the way up in his car, and we walked the last 1/2 mile to catch the summer sunrise from there. The second was in the same manner in 2016, when my friend and I drove to the 1/2 mile marker and walked the rest. Now, I feel that I earned it finally!! After my long rest, I decided to hike down Keller Peak Road back to my car near Hwy 18, as it was still closed to vehicle traffic, for a change of scenery. I got to enjoy the evening serenading croaks of Baja Tree Frogs (Pseudacris hypochondriaca hypochondriaca, and saw a deer to add icing to the cake! I believe that the hike was close to 12 miles r/t and with about 2,200' elevation gain.
