"A classic finale to a few days of backcountry skiing in the Eastern Sierra. We stubbornly/stupidly ignored the forecast and carried on with our plan to hit the Green Creek Couloir on our way back. After negotiating a jumble of icy logs across Green Creek and some hideous alder bushwhacking, we finally started the infinite skin zig-zagging up the apron. The storm the day before left about 2 inches at the bottom, but as we ascended the snow deepened to over 2 feet in the wind loaded gulley. We saw zero signs of instability and kept up a slow, methodical pace booting up the coolie into the wind. It was full-on midwinter conditions.
At the summit, I was shocked to see a group of skinners fast approaching the top of the couloir from across the plateau. We all transitioned in a panic and raced down to drop in. After the huge slog up we were determined to get the first tracks down the crazy long and aesthetic couloir. Apologies to the party behind us — we completely shredded the thing. The 2-inch wind crust on top most of the way made for horrible skiing and we had to cut all the way across the hill between attempts to break through.
