Iron Mountain

"Nora, and I took Aracellys, Jeff, Kali and Brooklyn up the newly redesigned trail to Iron Mountain and down to South Cliffs. It was a lot further down to the cliffs than we remembered, so we were worried we had gotten off the train onto something else for a while. Called Pam who assured us there wasn’t another trail. Views were great, but the climb back up to the fire tower from South Cliffs was a bit more grueling than I remembered from last time. Good hike. "Hike with Meghan. The weather was cool and windy. I wore a long sleeve shirt over my t-shirt for the whole hike. The trail is very eroded in sections making the ascent/decent feel much longer than it is. We went to the south ledges but nit to the mine. "Rainy foggy day with no far views. Weather report called for clearing late morning, Raining steady when I arrived at the trailhead. Attitude adjustment needed. Changed from Day Hiker, 'go if the weather is good' to Thru Hiker attitude of 'put the rain gear on and go', Glad I did!! Nice short hike with great foliage colors seen thru the mist and clouds! "Hiked the main trail up and back. A little tricky to find the trailhead. Roads to trailhead aren't very well marked. Absolutely beautiful views. Would definitely recommend this trail and hike it again. " — Amero4k • Jul 3, 2017

"We parked at the fork on Iron Mountain Road and headed up a very well packed road to the farm. At the farm we had to make our own way up to the summit in knee to thigh high snow. Tough travels at some points but overall an incredible day with beautiful weather and views. We headed over to the south cliffs to enjoy the view from that side as well. " — shay-shay • Jan 1, 2017

"Went with Nora & Kali. Gorgeous day, and the hike was wonderful. Stopped at the first viewpoint on the way up to the summit to drink in the awesome views, then, from the summit with the old toppled fire tower, we went across (down mostly) to the South Cliffs. Stunning views all over. The forest was particularly pretty between the summit and the cliffs. We decided not to go to the mine as most of what we'd read said it wasn't worth the .2 of a mile each way. If I do this hike again, I will check it out." — Hufflepuff • Sep 9, 2016

"Weather was nice and warm, so the breeze in the opening field was nice as are the views. Iron Mt trail is a little steep, but short. The two outlooks on the way are very nice. And the South cliffs are spectacular. The old iron mines aren't much." — Alohabuffy • Jul 26, 2016

"Great hike with minimal traffic. Trailhead has beautiful views of the Prezis. A couple view points to the summit look over the Prezis and Wildcat. The summit has remnants of a historical fire tower. A bit over the summit brings you to the South Cliffs...great views again!" — ksearl • Sep 3, 2009
