"I hiked up the standard way up this mountain. The trail was well maintained and has great views, well worth the 2 hour drive from LA to get here. Nice views from the top and not too crowded. Lots of switchbacks, and no shade except the trees at the start of the trail. " — lc444 • Sep 14, 2024
"First time up iron mountain! Ascended with light pace then picked up when it got steep. Feeling real good, definitely a technically hike towards the top but would absolutely do again!" — DKenney • Apr 9, 2023
"Day 3 and three more peaks. My sixth and final peak of the Inaugural San Diego Six Pack of Peaks Challenge and all three of todays peaks are part of the SD 100 Peaks Challenge (Derek's List). Peaks #6, #7 and #8. All combined the mileage for these three was 19.79 miles and 6,571 feet in elevation gain." — Philip-Yoho • Jan 3, 2021
"Great trip up to Iron Mountain (Poway) with a few minor detours. I followed the Ellie Lane Trail around to get a few extra miles in, but then saw a hill off in the distance that I wanted to attempt. There was no trail to it, just a lot of bushwhacking. Once I got there all the work was well worth it. The views were stunning. Even better than from Iron Mountain. I found out later that it was called Wildwood Mountain. Not a soul in sight on this route. After a short break I headed back through the brush, onto the actual trail and up to Iron Mountain. It was like a Congo line heading up to and down from the summit." — Philip-Yoho • Mar 18, 2017
"Started shortly after 8:30 on 4th of July - a little too late, since it was already getting quite warm! Sunny and clear on the lower slopes, but haze nearby made the summit view a little disappointing." — hoppyokapi • Jul 4, 2011
"A popular 6-mile dog-friendly hike, with a 1,050′ climb up to one of the most popular peaks in San Diego County, which offers spectacular views. Located near Poway, this exposed shadeless hike is best done before or after summer.
