"Morning solo hike up from Ausable Club Lake Road -> Gill Brook Cutoff. Hike starting from Gill Brook after the cutoff was pretty awesome and steep. Amazing engineering work with the steps and ladders on this one. Was a fun scramble up this side of Indian Head my legs were feeling it! Went over to north overlook which was nice then up and over indian head to the south overlook, was breathtaking. had a sandwich on the upper view overlooking lower ausable lake and then went down to the more expansive view, the hike over to fish hawk cliffs was rugged AF and at the bottom just a confusing set of muddy herd paths but figured it out quickly and proceeded up FHC. FHC was worth doing and had some great views as well. I returned back to Indian Head, and took the lake house trail down, ran into a photographer coming from this approach. This was an interesting approach as well. Then did the dreaded death march out lake house road back to the lot. . Weather was pleasant, no issue with bugs, but sun didnt come out until i stepped back in my car :) " — dennis-van-amburgh • Jun 11, 2025

"From AMR lot to H G Leach Trail by moonlight, headlamp to Bear’s Den, up to Dial, over to Nippletop, down to Elk Pass, up over Colvin to Blake, back over Colvin, down to Fish Hawk Cliffs, Indian Head, Gothics Window and back out to the lot. Long day " — DHiker • Oct 23, 2024

"A day hiking in the Adirondacks via the AMR trails to the Gill Brook trail to Indian head descending to rainbow falls and Beaver Meadow falls and out, Epic 18km day with an amazing team enjoying what Mark would have called, Heaven on earth!" — ramjet1963 • May 14, 2022

"Tough day! We set off from camp in the morning to do Fish Hawk Cliffs and Indian Head first. We had them to ourselves, which was amazing. Weather was cloudy. Sawteeth was a constant uphill trail--pretty brutal. " — hanawalton • Jul 23, 2021

"Bluebird day with amazing views from both Indian Head & Fish Hawk Cliffs. Took the Gill Brook Trail from the Lake Rd. to the top
of Indian Head & then backtracked to Fish Hawk. I made a loop of it by returning by the Colvin Trail & finally back to the Lake Rd.
The only drag was the amount of cars @ the parking area. I had two vehicles waiting to get into my spot when I returned. I'm not
a fan of the crowds & tend to stay away from the High Peaks." — billsussdorff • Aug 1, 2019

"Deep snow - trail fully broken - no ice. Cold to begin with but beautiful sunny day with cloudless sky. 3-4 feet of snow at the top in places. Just boots on Lake Road and then snowshoes to top and back to road. Little to no wind. 5-30 degrees. Saw a few people on the trail." — rhinteractive • Mar 20, 2018

"I heard about the views, and seen pictures. But being there to see it for yourself is priceless. WOW, arguably the best views in the Adirondacks, outside of the high peaks, if not everywhere !! Stunning views of the LGR, Sawteeth, Colvin, Nippletop and Lower Ausable Lake. Worth the extra few miles we added to our LGR hike. I'll come here again some day, so I can stay longer and soak up those amazing views." — HikingViking • Aug 26, 2017

"First peak of what would be a VERY long day. Wow, wow, wow. There's a reason why the views are so highly rated here... look at the photo. Then go see for yourself. It's a long hike but not at all difficult." — RangersApprentice • Aug 26, 2017

"Montée en douceur. Un bon 30 minute sur une route en terre tapée avant d'entrer dans le sentier. La vue du sommet est spectaculaire. Il y avait un groupe bruyant à notre arrivée, dommage. :-/" — MissPixels • Jun 4, 2016

"Hiked with Arin. "We came here just to take photos." "I left my GoPro in the car!" We started out heading toward the AMR gate around 10:00, and when we saw super grey skies, we decided to pass all the trailheads to Indian Head and scoot over to Rainbow Falls, since I skipped over it when I did Sawteeth. Well worth it! Beautiful. We were walking fast along Lake Rd & decided to scale our pace back a bit, and took the second trail to Indian Head. We hit the "summit" (the iconic photo spot!) a little before 13:00. It was a nice easy hike up. It was still a bit cloudy when we arrived at the summit but it started clearing up in short order & we took some fantastic photos. We met a fella from NYC and one from Oswego, and wound up hiking out with them and had a really great time overall. Trail conditions: no ice, nicely labelled trails, one ladder, not really any huffing and puffing. Planning to take the kiddos here in the future. Fantastic day!" — kellieirene • Apr 23, 2016
