"Mimi, Rebecca and I met at the Prediger road lot then we shuttled over to Mink Hollow in Mimi’s little Kona. Another day where the snowshoes just stayed in the car and only a pair or two of micro spikes were carried. The spikes were put on higher up on the mountain as we encountered short patches of ice that eventually became continuous. Our descent was nearly as slow as our ascent as we put safety ahead of any speed at this point do to the ice still rather hard with the lower morning temps.
Down in Mink hollow itself we met up with our friend Barbara who didn’t need Plateau but did need the other three peaks of the DP-4. To boost our spirits even more she came loaded with treats like muffins, wraps, bagel sandwiches and coffee from the Circle W market in Palenville. Our scamper over Sugarloaf, Twin and out & back from Indian head went much easier and faster as the warming temps softened the ice we encountered allowing better grip. On some of the easier downhills we actually ran with utmost confidence.
Our lunch stops were the view ledge on our way up Sugarloaf and the summit of south Twin where enjoyed Barbara’s treats in the sunshine. Since it’s still winter once the sun g..." — Nimblefoot • Feb 20, 2023

"A solo early hike on a mild winter day. Went up Twin first from the Notch and then tackled Indian Head. More sketchy rivers of icy, but managed to go around them. Used spikes until I was in flatter sections. Still slid a bit! Stick to rocks! 7.5 miles. Done by 11:30!" — lfrancois • Feb 12, 2023
"Mimi and I did the classic Devils Path 4 to close her month of January. We started off with the snowshoes on doing an up and back of Plateau then on the initial climb of Sugarloaf we switched to the micros. Basically just crunchy old snow with some ice here and there all day. Threw a lot of limbs off the trail the whole day and found the remains of a rather large fire right on the trail on the top of South Twin(which many folks confuse as the true summit). Unfortunately we didn’t spend time clearing it, to discourage this foolish habit, as we had to get the peaks done and get Mimi back down to central NJ before bedtime. Surprisingly she had the energy, after three days of hiking, to literally run down from Indian Head. Once down low on the Jimmy Dolan Notch trail with all the rocks, roots and water hazards combined with minimal snow she slowed to a more reasonable pace to complete our day in nice weather with occasional low clouds but no precip." — Nimblefoot • Jan 30, 2023

"A chilly hike with Nancy and Murphy on a bright sunny day. Getting another piece of Devil’s Path from Prediger Road. Easy start until we got to Sherman’s Landing and other steep sections. Helped Murphy up and over a few! Crossed over the summit a few times to find! Not bad going down Jimmy Dolan Notch. A few icy patches and frosty trees, but no need for spikes!" — lfrancois • Dec 9, 2022
"T-bone hike of Twin and Indian Head from Prediger road TH followed by a T-bone hike of Plateau and Sugarloaf from Mink Hollow. Approximately an inch of crunchy snow on Twin and Indian Head providing good grip with minimal slip. On Plateau and Sugarloaf the snow was a little more than an inch and softer but still offering grip. Micros carried but not deployed. Light flurries in the morning that became heavy snow showers in the afternoon making the day feel more winter.

"Out to get the 4 peaks of the east end of the Devils Path on two separate hikes. Got a brief light shower at the beginning of an O & B of Twin and Indian Head in the AM. An afternoon rain shower encouraged me to opt out of doing Sugarloaf therefore only getting Plateau while totally soaked which was quite refreshing once the rain stopped." — Nimblefoot • Aug 26, 2022
"Out to get Twin & Indian Head and Sugarloaf & Plateau on two separate hikes since only having one car. After getting both Twin and Indian Head I was back to Jimmy Dolan Notch when the forecasted T-storm swooped in and started making noise. I picked up the pace getting back to Prediger road with the sky getting darker. A light rain started when I was half way back then gradually got heavier so I was totally soaked by the time I reached my car. Of course as I quickly put on dry clothes the rain stops with just dripping from the trees. Now dry in my car it’s time for lunch then call it a day and head home as it still looks threatening." — Nimblefoot • Jun 1, 2022

"I parked my car at the end of my hike (Prediger Road) and arranged for Smiley's Taxi to pick me up and drive me to the beginning of my hike (Mink Hollow). The driver told me I was the first hiker of the year! I hiked up to the Devil's Path and went to Plateau first. Then, I backtracked up to Sugarloaf, which was a very difficult climb. It became icy and rainy towards the top. Once I summited Sugarloaf, things became easier. Then I continued to Twin, where I met a guy from Long Island and his dog. Between Twin and Indian Head, I met up with a group of Catskill 3500 club hikers who I talked to for a bit. There was a guy named Steven who was also finishing that day. At the base of Indian Head, I met another group who was very nice. After Indian Head, I backtracked back to Jimmy Dolan Notch and met up with that group again and they made me a pole arch and took pictures with me to celebrate my finishing my winter 35. "I joined Peter, Mimi, Barbara and Sherri for a saunter over the the four peaks of the eastern Devils Path. With temps down to the single digits the ice on the trail was a bit harder which showed the difference between Hillsounds and Kahtoolahs. Sherri, the only one of us using Kahtoolahs, quickly decided a pr of Hillsound trail crampons would be her next gear purchase. Beautiful sunny day allowed for great views and a wonderful hike." — Nimblefoot • Jan 8, 2022

"Completed two more Catskill 3500 peaks today with Indian Head and Twin Mountains. It was another gorgeous day filled with bluebird skies, empty trails, fresh air, and the smell of trees. A crisp 29 degrees to start. Fall will always be my favorite time to hike. This morning I spent a lot of time thinking about my son Wyatt on this the 8 year anniversary of his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis and his strength which is more than physical, some tears were shed. This was another solo venture. The only one to push yourself is you alone, again something I reflected on today and looked back on through the years. " — scottturner • Nov 4, 2021
