"Solo walk. From the layby at NT031312 near Culter Allers Farm. I walked up the tarred private road to Coulter Reservoir and the broad track that continues on the NE side of the reservoir and along Culter Water to the ridge S of Holm Nick. I struck across to the col at 604m and went on to Coomb Hill. I followed a fence to Gathersnow Hill and then Hillshaw Head. I used a wind farm road for part of the way to Coomb Dod. I had thought of being content for the day with the four tops I had reached. However, I could see from Coomb Dod that a wind turbine road went a good deal of the way towards Hudderstone so I included that as well. I descended over Snowgill Hill to the road to Culter Waterhead and went down the road back to the car. The weather was fine but a bit cold." — peter43 • Sep 10, 2020
"After the Easter break, with most back at work, one day remained before the forecast changed to rain and thunder. I took the long drive north from my home in Wales to Crawford, South Ayrshire, in southern Scotland. The weather was bright and dry, though thin high cloud diffused the sunlight till late in the afternoon, when the sun broke through. A strong dry easterly wind slowed hiking progress on the tops.
Driving east up the Camps glen, I parked below the reservoir dam above some cottages. Taking the tarmac, then grit, road up to the dam, I followed it on the north side of the Camps Reservoir to the lonely farmstead at Grains. Ascending the ridge of Backwater Rig (511m/26m), I entered the vast wind-farm, newly constructed, which now mars the remote peace of these hills. Nevertheless, the wide grit roads made for easy walking. Diverting from the road, startling a mountain hare, I soon reached the trig point on Coomb Dod. There were good, if hazy, views east to Broad Law, at 840m the highest hill in the Southern Uplands.
A short drop and ascent by a fence on grass brought me on top of Hillshaw Head, my highest summit of the day. I retraced my route to the grit road..." — marktrengove2 • Apr 23, 2019
