"A super cool place to experience. Took the main tourist route from the parking lot up to the top of this dune, no shoes needed. Overall rating 8/10, a otherworldly kind of hike" — MountainQuest • Jun 12, 2023
"This was my first time going to Colorado. I hiked both of these dunes with my friend Michael.
This was a somewhat difficult hike due to the sand. Your feet are constantly sinking into the sand which makes progress slow. This slowness was compounded by the fact it was our first day at elevation after coming from sea level. The first ridge is easily the hardest part of the hike because you gain most of your elevation here. I recommend either walking barefoot or in only socks in the sand. It makes things much easier. You can essentially take any path you want to the top. Once you've made it to the top of Star Dune, it is worth climbing to the top of High Dune. The views of the mountains are amazing.
At the top of the dunes, we noticed a storm coming from towards the mountains. We quickly made it down to a lower elevation, but still got caught in the rain. The rain was heavy and there was also decent-sized hail coming down. Try and be off the summit by the afternoon if climbing in the summer." — Noodles • Jun 2, 2021
"Actually climbed this twice. First around noon, and then for sunset and to watch the lunar eclipse. Fun times navigated down during the eclipse (super dark). Need to come back and do Zwischen." — tylerburg • Sep 27, 2015
