"A group of us backpacked to the hidden forest cabin, set up camp for the night and summited Hayford Peak. We took the gully route up to the main route, which was steep and more fun than the standard route. We descended the standard trail back to camp. " — maggielynn • May 27, 2023
"Hiked up Saturday morning to the Hidden Forest Cabin, set up camp and hiked up to Hayford before returning to camp and hiking back out Sunday morning. The time listed is moving time not including camping overnight. " — acekelly • May 27, 2023
"Desert National Wildlife Refuge. 16 miles, 4,200’ gain in 6:51 RT including :30 min of breaks at the cabin & Summit. I’ve been working food delivery (via car & e-bike$$) the last 5 months and am not in the shape I was last year since my workouts are sparse, boring and less intense. Thank goodness for muscle memory. After working all day Friday, I treated myself to this 24hr adventure. I drove out to Mile 3 of the 20 mile dirt road & pigged out on Taco Bell then slept in my car. I awoke at dawn, slammed coffee and drove in for this hike. There wasn’t a soul around, it was lonely and remote but that was just what I needed. There was a Butterfly/Bird parade as I ran down Deadman’s Canyon back to my car. I felt like I was Mountaineer Cinderella in a Disney Movie. My second time doing this peak (6 yrs ago) …1st time solo." — paula.raimondi • Oct 8, 2022
"Did the typical route to Hayford via Hidden Cabin. Did it as a backpack; came in, backpacked to Hidden Cabin, set up the tent and ate lunch, then pushed up to the peak and back. Gorgeous day, definite snow on the route once we pushed up from Hidden Cabin to the peak. The last ~800 ft to the summit, especially the last ~400, had a lot of snow that was slippery and slushy and just not so fun on the rock. After completing the peak, we came back down to our campsite next to the Hidden Cabin (another group had the cabin) and spent the night. We were trying out our four season tent. It was... cold, and we had condensation problems. Things to workshop; this was a shakedown backpacking hike for Baker (which, spoiler alert, didn't happen because of weather). Overall a good hike, dang it is steep from Hidden Cabin up to the summit, and especially the last push. " — psychikingjes • Apr 23, 2022
"Killer backcountry Summit adventure with Shin. He led me to this peak for my 1st time and showed me a plane crash site on the descent down a different canyon. We visited the Hidden Forest Cabin and saw fossils and animal bones too. It was a Very rugged off trail route through the deep dark canyons and dramatic high points of the Hidden forest in the Sheep Range. Amazing day. 16+ miles 4,200 gain in 6:26 moving time, 8:29hr total time with site seeing and pics. " — paula.raimondi • May 23, 2016
"Great Trip with more Snow than expected but a great Adventure. Not so much visited at this time of the Year. A few People had been to the Cabin this past weekend so it was easy to follow in their Footsteps. The Trail to the Peak I had to find by myself in the Snow. " — Nuernberger • Dec 16, 2014
"Had an enjoyable early morning hike through Deadman's Canyon and luckily had cloud cover the entire ascent from the cabin. The hike itself was very peaceful and enjoyable, but the summit views weren't great. Was shocked when during the descent my white fluffy sun-blocking clouds turned thunderous and I was caught in a downpour... after I had checked the weather that morning and it said 0% chance of rain.... and I had to hike out in a desert wash.... and drive over several washes on a 4WD road with a 2WD car.... that was a fun couple hours." — Christopher • Jul 25, 2013
"Solo day trip. The canyon is pretty & there were lots of blooming roses & other flowers. The ridge was...long. There seemed to be a cairn every 10 feet which is completely unnecessary, since the peak is entirely visible the whole way. There was a gorgeous sunset brewing when I got back to the Jeep, so I waited around & watched the spectacle unfold. A great reward for a long hike." — StudioHoodoo • Jun 13, 2010
