"Wednesday 25th April 2018. An ascent of Hartsop above How 581m/27m in the Eastern Fells, from Cow Bridge near Hartsop, Lake District, Cumbria. 8.6km, with 640m of ascent. 4hrs 25mins.
After excellent coffee and cake in DB's house, we headed to Windermere, and over the Kirkstone Pass, parking in the car park at Cow Bridge, a little north of Brothers Water. It was already raining, and the forecast was for more to come. Full wet weather gear was called for from the start. Our aim was to do the complete Dovedale horseshoe up to Hart Crag and down to High Hartsop Dodd, but we kept in mind that this might turn out to be rather unpleasant in the conditions.
We headed north, keeping off the busy A 592 by taking a permissive path through the woods, not marked on the map. Eventually this joined the right-of-way from Bridgend that wound up the long curving north-east ridge of the fell. A series of minor tops made the ascent more interesting - Bleaberry Knott, Gale Crag, Hoggill Brow and Buck Stones.
