"Took the 4 mile scree/scramble route. Rough, but fun! The gnat situation was out of control in the trees tho. 10/10 would recommend for those looking for more of a challenge and less of a hike. " — conkel13579 • Sep 14, 2024
"This was a horrible time from start to finish. It took me fifteen minutes longer to get down then it did to get up . You have to be a masochist to want to go up this way. Sandals didn’t help on this one lol. Now I know better . Guess I was too flustered to snap any pics but route is there " — joshortman • Nov 1, 2022
"Started from the trailhead at the top of Harris Springs Rd. Went up the ridge line toward Harris Mt, stopping at South Harris (aka BBK) on the way and then going over to Mally Peak after Harris Mt. Part of the descent route, the section down to the Harris/Griffith trail, is steep but saves going up and down on the ridge line back to the trailhead. Also, you get to hike the trail with great views of Lovell Canyon. " — Heartattackbruce • Sep 27, 2022
"This is more of a conditions report than a trip report. South-facing, and even some north-facing routes to big peaks in Kyle Canyon look mostly snow-free. I took the ridge up, which is largely free of brush since the 2013 fire. The road is navigable by careful driving and a car with more that 7" clearance AND a good spare tire. The worst issue with the road is that the upper portion has just a few turnouts in the switchbacks; it would be extremely hard to pass another car.
I first went up Harris almost 20 years ago." — hwstock • May 6, 2022
"11.3.2021~Griffith Peak (11,060’) /Harris Mtn. (10,060’) Combo Meal, via The Rainbow Subdivision in Kyle Canyon, 11 miles, 5,000’ gain in 7:08hrs. I took it slow because I forgot my ankle brace, the route is rough and in a burn area with a lot of off trail, so I couldn’t hurl myself up and down these mountains as fast as I normally would. An unusually warm November had me choosing shorts instead of leggings. My normal 1.5 liters of water wasn’t enough (due to the heat) so I drank a bottle of melted snow. I consumed only one homemade meatball sammie. This rarely used 5 mile Griffith/Harris Trail was recently restored (after being decimated in the 2013 Carpenter 1 fire) by hard working volunteers. I use this route often but I use to have to climb over many logs and clamber over cliffs on the ridge as the trail was very hard to follow. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen what it looked like before the fire. The mountain is quiet with ample solitude. It felt good to be in high elevation again." — paula.raimondi • Nov 3, 2021
"I've been wanting to try this route to Harris for a while now, but the idea of bushwhacking didn't entice me, so I kept putting it off. Well, today was the day. Ritch and I started from across the roundabout from the Spring Mountain Visitor Center, hiked onto the Packrat Trail, then the Escarpment Trail before breaking off to attempt the potential break in the cliffs. Luckily, it did go through, so we saved a bit of trail walking. Once above the cliffs, we tried to make our way to the ridge I had planned to go up, but it was too difficult to get to, so we chose another steep ridge. The brush was thick & painful, but passable without a machete. Once on the ridgeline, the brush was much more manageable. We made our way along the ridge, stopping at Dragonfly Overlook and Mally Peak along the way. Instead of returning the same way, we opted for a more direct route down to the road. It started out steep, but ok. It never got BAD, but it wasn't good until we hit pavement at the campground. We hiked through the campground, then took a series of trails back to the Visitor Center, then our car. It was a hot, humid, tiring day." — Kevin • Aug 14, 2021
"10.20.18 Harris & Griffith Peaks loop. 5,200’ of vert in 7 (off trail) miles on rough terrain....12 miles total. We used “Old” South Loop trail as a descent route. I had the pleasure of spending the morning with beautiful and strong Maia Detmer on this special and challenging route (I am learning to love.) I learned of this route from my Buddie Harlan but I take the Harris ridge up from a different area. I’ve done it several times this year in different ways and it’s always a hard fight. I’ve almost convinced myself to never do it again. Today I was totally zen and seemed to follow the route better than I ever have. It didn’t feel like a nightmare like it always does. It has such unique views of the mountain.
It was lovely sharing the experience with Maia. We had wonderful conversation and the hard miles flew by. Thank you for a great day 🤗
(She is steady and strong and I did it faster than I ever have before. I was starving because I’m use to hiking alone and eating 10 sandwiches along the way. I learned today that I am still strong without eating 10 sandwiches!!!
We were on the top of Harris in 2:09hr (from Echo Lot) ...on the top of Griffith at 4:31hr into the trek. And done..." — paula.raimondi • Oct 20, 2018
"10.5.18 Harris Peak with Sierra. 6 plus miles total w/ over 3,000’ vert gain in the 3 miles to the summit. Fun buddie trek up and down the big sloppy Harris Ridge. It’s a fun scenic obstacle course. There are still few wildflowers clinging to life before winter comes....Harlan showed me this ridge route but I do it a little different." — paula.raimondi • Oct 5, 2018
"6 peaks (Mummy, Lee, Mt Charleston #61, South Mt Charleston H.P., Griffith & Harris) 23 miles, 8,400’ gain (the most vert. gain I’ve ever done in one workout), 14 hours. Very epic day in the mountains for me. My plan was my own version of a multi peak hike in the Spring Mtns. I woke a bit late so I was discouraged at the start but I kept moving forward and accumulated what I could. I got my 10th new ascent route to Mt Charleston. I traversed the entire North Ridge from Mummy (for the 1st time. Very sketchy in spots) I ascended Lee Peak from the ridge for the 1st time and went farther on South ridge than I’ve ever been before bagging So. Mt Charleston H.P. for my 2nd time. The sun was sinking in the sky when I arrived at Griffith but I wanted to include Harris (because I’m never doing this again) so I raced the shadows...but lost! The traverse from Griffith to Harris is a complete nightmare Barkley’s experience choked with debris, downed trees and is impossible to move quickly through. The old trail is destroyed and impossible to follow. I summited Harris with a big moon rising but darkness fell and I had to descend the rough Harris ridge in the dark from memory as my beam of light ..." — paula.raimondi • Aug 25, 2018
"8.21.18 Harris/Griffith Peaks clockwise Traverse. 12 miles, 5,300’ vert. gain. Ascent route was direct to Harris Peak via the NW ridge (in between Fletcher campground & Rainbow subdivision). I descended Griffith using old South Loop and the hwy. That was a very satisfying epic accomplishment. I’m really proud of this one. It was an obstacle course of downed burned trees and tree limbs trying to poke me in the eye all day. There was nice cooling wind and dramatic lenticular clouds above me (and below the sun 😉)
My hamstring is strained so I couldn’t scamper as fast as I usually do so it was 7:11hrs (including 1 hr worth of breaks on the summit and photos) What a gorgeous route. It definitely looks easier on paper. There was a cliffy area on the traverse that I didn’t expect but I dealt with it and got it done. That was hard!" — paula.raimondi • Aug 21, 2018
