"6/29/24: Kevin, Paul, and I drove up Handcart Gulch from Hall Valley CG approximately 2.8mi to start our adventure (although Kev would probably argue the adventure started with the drive up!). Smooth sailing up the switchbacks until about 75yds short of Webster Pass. Considered climbing down and around the super steep snowfield that protruded down to and below the road. It would have afforded a more direct path up to the pass, but Kevin didn’t have an ice axe and so it didn’t seem prudent. We backtracked to a spot we had been checking out as an alternative to the pass and despite being steep and chossy it appeared to possibly be the only snow/cornice free portion to the ridge. Thankfully, other than some steep muddy runoff, we gained the Divide and were able to stroll over to the summit of Peak 12400.
We picked the CDT back up at the saddle and traversed around to the NE ridge of and up Handcart Peak to its broad, flat alpine summit. Probably the best vantage point of the day: Red Cone, down Handcart Gulch and Hall Valley, back up the previously traversed Santa Fe/Geneva Peak route, and the rest of the day’s ridge hike in front of us.
After lunch we started for Teller Mtn." — LoneWolf • Jun 29, 2024
